I purchased this Anemone from a LFS and they told me it was a purple footed, green tipped BTA. After looking around on-line I've not seen anything like it so I was wondering if maybe the ID was wrong. Perhaps a Mag. Does anyone know? Thanks!
Look like a BTA to me. The pics aren't great, but the ring at the end of the tentacles screams BTA. Not all BTAs have that ring, but I've never seen a mag with the rings.
haha.. Im 100% sure this is a Mag.. Maybe, 99%.. Look at the picture I posted, I know it is not a great photo but it is the same species as the picture that the OP posted.
Either the tentacles or clowns have been blocking the view. I will try and get a better pic of the mouth tomorrow. The mouth and color are what made me post. The mouth is green and usually slightly open. Inside the slightly open mouth is all white. I had read that slightly open mouth is typical for a Mag...which is what made me think that is what I had.
What made me think it might be a BTA was the position. I had heard that BTAs like to position themselves under a ledge and Mags like horizontal rocks. This one is latched on in a vertical hole that is like a ledge...made me think the LFS had it right at BTA.
it's a toughy, the mouth doesn't say much. but the number of tentacles, how they react to the light, how the tentacles are situated on the edge and how the edge of the disk reacts to light, all point to mag.
pics #4 and the last itch of mag
ugh, but there is a bit of bubble to those tips......
Those pics scream Mag to me. Often times when they are smaller they have those bubbly/stubby tips.. Shape of the tentacles patten on the oral disc both lead me to Mag.
The ring pattern on the tip of the tentacles I have only ever seen on H. Mag
To everyone I disagree with - you're AMESOME TOO! LOL!
What is more important than knowing a name is getting it really healthy and established in your tank. Once it settles in and relaxes and adapts a more natural form it will be easy to tell what species it is.
