Anemone in trouble

Some background: About two months ago I bought a GBTA to host my tomato clowns. Everything was fine until I went on vacation. It ate what I fed it and whatever it could grab when I fed the fish. It stayed in the same spot since its first night in the tank and was regularly inflated (with the occasional bubble tip.)

Two weeks ago I left for a one week vacation. I do not have anybody to watch my tank when I'm away so the tank was not fed or topped off. I also turn off my skimmer because there's no one to empty it. Never had problems with this arrangement in the past.

I returned from vacation a week ago to find a small clam (2") had died. All fish and corals (LPS, softies, polyps) looked good. But the anemone was totally deflated with its mouth gaping. At least its guts weren't hanging out. I tested the water and everything was fine except nitrates (10 ppm) and phos (.03 ppm) were higher than normal. I believe this is likely attributable to the clam death and heavy feeding leading up to vacation. SG went from 1.024 to 1.026. I did a large water change that night and another two days later. All tests were back to normal.

The anemone has not eaten since I returned and stays pretty much deflated with its mouth gaping when the lights are on. When the lights go out it expands (not fully, about 75%) and its mouth closes (mostly). The last couple of days it has partially expanded some of the time the lights are on. Also, yesterday morning it began to move and by this morning it had moved 8" to the opposite side of the "island" it has been on since day one. Its tentacles continue to shrink but there is no sign it is decomposing.

I suspect it was stressed (obviously) by deteriorating water quality and possibly hungry tankmates (flame angel?) and expelled its algae. I'm hoping that begining some expansion under the lights is a good sign.

Has anyone had a similar experience? Is there any hope for my GBTA? Any suggestions on how to proceed?

I've tried to take pictures but all I get is a blur. I need to learn how to use my camera!

Tank: 125 gal, 3x250 10K MH, 2x160 VHO actinic, temp 79-82

Sorry for the long post, tried to include everthing I could think of.

There is LOTS of hope for your BTA. A salinity of 1.026 is perfect for keeping anemones IMO. I have three tanks of anemones and keep the Sg at 1.026 in all tanks.

Keep the water parameters up to par, regular feedings (tiny portions) and it should come back. Food soaked in Selcon may help also. A picture is always more helpful, even a blurry one.

Was the tank on its normal lighting schedule while you were on vacation?

Lights were on normal schedule while I was on vacation.

I don't know that it expelled its zooxanthellae. I was just thinking it was possible and that's why it's shrinking from the lights now. It doesn't appear bleached though.

I will bring sg to 1.026 by topping off with saltwater.

No change in appearance from yesterday. It did moved a couple inches higher overnight.

I hope you're right redvipe, but when I got home tonight it looked worse than ever, totally deflated. For comparison, the pics below are from about a month ago and tonight. The colors are off, it was never as green as in the top pic and it's a little darker than the bottom pic.

BTW, I'm not too far from you (Flossmoor). I been out your way many times to play Nettle Creek.

I don't ever remember seeing a GBTA that color. Is that first pic a true representation of the color, or has the camera altered it a bit. I'm wondering if it was dyed. And your right, it looks bad.

Where did you get it? I would test your water parameters again also.

You have probably golfed with my husband, Nettle Creek is pretty close to our house. Golf is his addiction! I was just up your way today at Christ Hospital visiting a relative.

No, it wasn't that color. I was trying to capture the flourescence of the green tentacles under actinics only and that's what I got. My camera's a couple of months old and I really haven't had time to learn all its features. It's coloring has always been closer to the second picture, though, as I said, it's actually a little darker (browner, tanner) than the pic shows.

Got the BTA from LiveAquaria in mid-April. Everything was fine (seemingly, it's my first anemone) until I got back from vacation 10 days ago.

I've been testing daily. sg 1.025, pH 8.3, dKH 10.6, nitrates <5ppm, phos <.03ppm, calcium 435, daily temp 79-82

It actually perked up some shortly before the halides went off last night. It moved a couple inches more overnight and was inflated pretty well this morning.

At this point I don't know what else I can do. I'll continue to monitor the water and hope for the best.

Thanks redvipe and j.
