Anemone Tank Pros/Cons

sinned

Hello-
I currently have a LPS dominated tank (see below). 44 gal. glass (36X15X18).
175w MH w/2 39w T-5's.Center overflow - sumpless-skimmerless-reactorless.
I dose a capful of iodine, calcium and magnesium weekly. Circulation is via a Tunze 6100 placed in upper left corner. I am contemplating converting it to an anemone tank.
What are the pros and/or cons of such a tank. Is lighting sufficient? Supplements?
Other considerations? Thanks for your help. Dennis

you will deffinatly need a skimmer and would also reccomend a sump. Lighting should be good if you can get it up near the light, this also depends on the type of anenome. I would say stick with what you got, your tank looks great and healthy.

Lighting is fine. Contrary to popular belief, a lot of anemone species do better in tanks that aren't pristine. The only one that doesnt (that I can think of) is Heteractis Magnifica.
The con in a smaller tank is that you really can't add anything else.

I've got a 16" across sebae in my 58, adn I have to make sure he can't reach anything else.

I would start with some easier ones and work your way up but it seems your good to go. Your lighting should be fine (i can keep them under just VHO), i would recomend a skimmer/sump but it doesn't look like you'll need one. Anemones are alot hardier than most people think.

Thanks guys for all the input!

Mr. Furious there is a pair of yellow assessors, pair of
clowns, purple tang, blue damsel and yellow watchman goby.

Anemones require skimmers, while LPS don't? I think he'd be fine skimmerless if his tank is fine with it now.

I don't think water quality is an issue with such an established tank. Personally, I'd add a skimmer to be on the safe side because I feed my RBTAs a bit more than my LPS.

"NEED to try something new"? There are always those colored sticks!

I agree (and have done the same), but it also depends upon the health of the animal to begin with and the proper care taken to ensure optimal health in the long run.

Nothing requires a skimmer and never let anyone tell you otherwise. I have 3 BTAs in my 37g soft/lps/anemone tank they are all doing so well, if you feed them silversides they grow like weeds!

I am betting if you take out and move your corals around you can just add an anemone to it and then let it find its place and then replace your corals. Very beautiful LPS tank you have BTW.

I have to say Don't Do It. The only reason being that your tank is one of the best/most unique i've ever seen. I love it just the way it is. It's a departure from the norm and TOTM material IMO.

Would love to see more pics.

Why not save up and have a second Nem tank.
