Hi, i really want to get an anemone, but will one be fine in a 10 gallon tank?? i bought a baby clown and i was told i can get other coral that it will host in but i would loove an anemone but i get negative feedback from my reef store here in town to not get one.. (i will be getting a larger tank for christmas, but im just starting off with a 10 gallon.. )

please any suggestions of types of anemones for my 10 gallon tank that would be great! (im also a beginner.....)

Yeah, that's what I did. Just make sure they look nice and healthy. How long has your tank been up and running?

Do yourself a favor and read the stickies. Yes an anemone can be kept in a 10 gallon but how you have it setup and how much you maintain it will have a lot to do with its success. Even if you manage water quality, making sure it doesn't get shredded by a powerhead is a whole other challenge. IMO all hosting nems will outgrow a 10 gallon fairly quickly. Not saying it can't be done but you should definitely read the Anemone FAQs and go from there.

10 g is not a tank to keep an anemone, even a BTA.
do your self a favor and listen to the LFS. On RC you always find someone said something that you want to hear, but keep a host anemone in a 10 g tank is not a reasonable option.

Kudos to your LFS for giving you solid advice instead of trying to sell you something that would likely end up dying or outgrowing your system quickly. Yes, some people may be able to keep a BTA in a ten gallon tank short term, BUT since you had to ask this question i'm assuming you don't have the proper knowledge or experience in order to take on this task. I would refrain until you have a larger tank. In the meantime do some research on these animals.

Yep, I applaud your LFS also. Wait for your larger tank and then wait some more until it has matured. Your clown will be fine without one. That will give you lot's of time to research and decide which anemone would suit your needs.

What kind of clown did you get?

hi thankyou for all of your advice! my tank is still cycling.. my clown is bought for already but waiting at my little store here in town until i take him home, i just didnt want anyone else to buy him cause i fell for him fast. he is a Ocellaris. soo cute only like not even a inch big yet i think

my bigger gallon is a 125gallon established tank from my little store here in town.. comes with everything.. even the rock and coral thats allready established in the tank.. i saw alot of info on anemones that to wait untill my tank is a year old.. and to cover my power heads untill hes settled in a spot.. i guess ill just get a anemone look alike coral.. (im still getting used to all the names of corals.) im really a beginner.. thats why im starting with a small tank with one fish.. and corals.. and a shrimp with some snails..
Thankyou!! :)

Be careful with corals; clownfish can be too affectionate and actually damage corals as well. I'm sorry, I know it's not what you want to hear, but I'm also trying to save you the money of buying one of these corals and it dies... also, to have corals or nems, you need to also make sure you have proper lighting (not saying you dont, it just wasnt mentioned. You can use lower lighting for fish only) I would hold off on the nem and anemone look alike corals until you have the bigger tank. The only other option would be as long as the upgrade is a 100% definite, you can put a small nem in your 10 gal but you MUST make sure it gets a bigger tank before it outgrows the 10 gal. There are tons of people who swear they'll be upgrading (like those who have a hippo tang in a 20 gal tank) and never do; it only costs you the money when you lose something and costs the coral/fish/nem their life. I often ask advice on here for my tank inhabitants, and what I'd like to put in, but I also do research on my own as well to learn what's best for what livestock we choose. Good luck in everything! A 125 would be awesome for an anemone.

If you're getting it in dec, 3 months is not very long to wait to add the anemone. I'd hold off on stocking your 10 gal too much, it will be more you need to acclimate to the new tank. :) Nems are also prone to stress (especially bubble tips) so I also wouldnt risk that chance of moving from tank to tank to tank in such a short period of time.

hi, thanks! yeah people can say anything on the internet about yes yes im upgrading.. but really not.. and will keep a larger tang in a smaller tank.. i actutally put my deposit on that tank in the picture.. and im getting it delivered dec 8! (its for my sons birthday and both of our xmas present.. ) no other presents for him! haha since this is soo expensive! wow! and even this small 10 gallon tank is expenshive.. with all the money im putting into it with a skimmer and filter and heater and everything.. i should have just gotten a 20-25 gallon for this one.. lol my heater will heat that size and my filter will filter that size.. and yes i got a good light! if you want to see my set up for my 10 gallon it is on youtube my name on there is girlyfarmergirl. my videos are on there with my tank and info.. i went into another oceanic specialty store and i asked for a light to grow corals.. and i payed well over 100$ for it so it better be a good light! take a look and let me know! please all the feedback is awesome.. its all learning for me.. im so brand new, iv only had Betta fishes.. lol :)

awesome!! Props to you for doing the setup research; a lot of people dont anymore. I was going to do a 10 gal SW tank, but after seeing all the costs, it wouldn't be much more to do a 20-30 instead and have more room LOL! Unless you've already bought it, you dont NEED a skimmer for that small of a tank. I've heard many people say anything under a 55 (or maybe 40?) not to use a skimmer... why, I dont know, I just know I've heard that more than once, so that can save you some money. We have a 55 gal saltwater right now, and upgrading to a 120 once we buy a house, and just listing out what new things we need to buy for the upgrade I can see how expensive it will be! (i wasnt around when he first started the tank lol, so I didn't see initial costs!)

hmm i was hoping to start a little reef in my 10 gallon.. what coral do you recomend for clowns??

Honestly, I would recommend harder corals for clowns. Anything "flowy" like hammers, torch, long tentacled plate corals, and flower pots have a risk of damage if the clown tries to host in them. The "body" of the coral gets rubbed on the skeleton too much from the clown and it can tear and damage tissue in the coral, which can often kill it. You could do candycane coral, mushrooms, (one of my favorites) fox coral, leathers, actually, toadstool leathers will host clownfish with no harm to the coral. I found a nice one on here in my local reef club for a quarter the price my LFS wanted for one smaller.

You still have TONS of options for a nano; honestly I thought the same thing when I was planning mine. I forgot about zoas, they are little, but come in so many different colors, and not very expensive either, they also spread quick. Also star polyps, we got a decent sized frag for $10 at the LFS (I'm sure prices are different everywhere, but that is THE cheapest I've ever seen a frag there. The stars are not only pretty, but cheap, however they do grow fast, and some people see them like a weed.)

well with the 125 gal tank im getting it with all those corals in it and rock, and sand and water and light and everything to need a 125 tank its a custom made tank for 5000.. thats why im paying by weekly for it and waiting untill december.. yeah i should have just gotten a bigger size tank.. can i just buy a new bigger tank and transfur the water and gravel to it and let it cycle some more?? and just buy more water?? this little tank is soo small, but soo cute.. lol but i was hoping to keep an enemone in the small tank and not have it in the larger tank.. or i could get a larger tank and use the 10gallon as a sump.. lol then id just have to find a new spot for the tank.. right now it is sitting on my sewing machine table.. of my old 1950's sewing marchine thats inside..
what do you recomend ? maybe getting a 30 gallon?? my filter will work for a 30 gallon.. and my heater should too.. (i hope ) but not my light.. sighs..) never mind.. lol

hmm im gonna have to copy those corals down and look them up.. i was told there was this toadstool that my clown would do well in at my local shop here in town.. but we will see.. my clown is sooooooo little.....

the local shop here in town is pretty decent.. you can tell he looks out for me and my purchases if i get something at another store..

i was also hoping for a starfish and a clam in this 10 gallon reef????
