Had a 75gal for 8 mos b4 Hurricane Ivan hit our area & crashed my tank. After that ordeal (amazing how you can get so attached to freaking fish:o) I said I would never go there again , but my husband surprised me w/ a 72 gal bow front for christmas that had been up & running for 1 1/2 years. It only had live rock & a damsel (which I gave away). A few mos later I added a maroon clownfish that was hosting a gbta. A week later my husband surprised me w/ a BIG clarki that was hosting another gbta (I had a hard time deciding between the 2 @ our lfs, so he thought he was doing good). After a week of the maroon beating up the clarki, they finally settled down, on other sides of the tank. The clarki has outgrown his gbta (he is a pig & about 3 1/2") & has almost killed his gbta. I put a net & a kitchen strainer over the gbta for a few days, but the clarki was going nuts., so I bought a beautiful rbta twice his size (which he loves). The following day, the other gbta split. The rbta has been in the tank for about 3 weeks now & I woke up this a.m to find it has split also! I have done alot of research on the net & they are either stressed or reproducing:confused: . My paramaters are : cal:460, Ammonia: 0, nitrates: 0, PH 7.8 , Alk: normal range, salinty: 1.023. Have had a problem w/ cyno for a few weeks, but I think I am about to beat it (20% water change once a week). Sorry so long, but i need to know is this good or bad? Will the anemoes do ok w/o a host fish?

I only wanted one anemone, now I have 5, counting the beat up one I am now trying to nurse back to health. He is hanging in there. I have tried to post some pics, but cant get them to work. will keep trying.

They say anemoen splits because: they are stressed, been feed almost daily, you have a bad water params, etc.

Why not try reading some info from karensroseanemones.com

Well my RBTA split after I bought it yesterday.

I think my water parms are good. I feed the nems every other day, so maybe I feeding them too much. Is once or twice a week too little? I feel so guilty not feeding them when my fish seem like they are starving when I feed them. (once a day w/ pellets soaked in garlic, nori every other day, & brine shrimp once a week). So you think I am feeding the nems too much, causing them to split? I really dont want a tank full of anemones. My beat up anemone is hanging in there, I have been feeding him a tiny piece of shrimp, scallop or fresh fish every day. He looks so sad, just a plate w/ little nubs, but is looking much better since my clarki isnt wallering around in him all day. I hope I can bring this little guy back. But then, I'll have 5 of them , sigh! Be careful for what you wish for, you just might get it. Thanks for the reply.

Still havent got an answer to my question. Will the anemones be ok , thrive, without a fish to host them? Also, I have tried to post some pictures, Can someone tell me how to reduce my pic size? Have transfered to photobucket, still cant get it to work (idiot, I guess......Help us idiots)

as far as I understand it there is no need for the nem to have a fish hosting it and my lbta which is in the same tank as my ritteri and RBTA is doing jsut fine without one... MY RBTA split after moving the tank and my ritteri got sucked into a power head and I am not sure if he is splitting or just healing but still looks quite happy with good color and eating well...

Anemones can live happily in the tank even without a fish to host.

If you want more information go to this website and read : karensroseanemones.com

They are fine, most people wait and wait for their anemones to split, that way their clowns are more happy, and if they want they can sell one of them and buy other stuff for their tank. I think you are very fortunate that they have split. Let them heal for about a week until they form their mouths again, and once you see that they actually have a mouth, give them small chunks of krill or silversides or whatever you were feeding before. Congratulations on your split by the way. Splits usually happen to me when I do a water change or stir the tank up really bad. Or leave the lights on longer than usual. I think it is both something they do to try and protect themselves and also a way to reproduce. (If water quality decreases, they split so that hopefully at least one will survive. If it is after a water change, they probably feel that it is the best time to split because of the good water in the tank.) So congratulations on your split, let them heal for about a month and if you don't want them all, you can probably sell the rbta for 60-100 and the gbta from 20 50 depending on size. good luck

Ghee, thanks for posting my pics!:p Maybe this idiot will figure it out one day:confused:. Anyway, my nems have finally settled down & seem to have found a home (been in the same place for several days now...fingers crossed) One is attached on the back side of the tank but finally moved up closer to the lights today, so he had his 1st meal tonight. I am feeding them 2x per week now (not every other day). Didnt want so many nems but I have become quite attached to them. Go figure! I want to thank everyone for your replies. This is a great site! I have learned so much here.
