Anenome Feeding (pictures)

I have two Anenomes with one hosting Black half striped (percula or ocellaris, I don't know which).

I have had the purple tip for 6 1/2 monthes and the Carnation for 3 monthes

My anenome's survive on their Algae alone, I tried feeding the purple tip in the beginning but it didn't want to eat.

I do put Zooplanton and phytoplankton in the tank, could they be eating that? I also put in brine shrimp sometimes for the fish and shrimp, but I don't see any going to the anenome.

Should I try feeding again?
What do you recomend feeding?
I would love for them to get nice and big.

Here are some pics:

not great lighting (10,000 w flouresent), but Ive seen the same species in other very healthy thanks with mh lighting that have the same colors.

would a bleached anenome live for 6 monthes?

it is not uncommon for condy's to be all white with colored tips in nature, that's what the last two pics look like to me.

it is amazing how everyone's first response to a white anemone or coral is to tell you that it is bleached and will die in a week, without thinking that some species are SUPPOSED to be white...

In any case, my condy eats meaty foods, i give it a piece of shrimp or krill 2-3 times a week and it sucks it in and sticks it in it's mouth. Then again, plenty of people report good results not feeding at all, letting them get food from the water and light, of course they usually have MH or very stron PC lighting...

one thing that is interesting is that it is pretty rare for any clown to host in one.. you should feel special :)

the carnation i know nothing about, sorry.

Hello in Elmira!
Since you're a Mets fan I'm going to guess that you're in Elmira, NY.
Make sure to look up the "Upstate Reef Society" (URS) in the RC club forums- there are reefkeepers keeping anemones successfully in your neck of the woods.
Also make sure to read the excellent Anemone FAQ located at the top of this forum.
There are several things you can do to help your anemones live long term. A lighting upgrade would seem to be in order. NO (normal output) fluorescent lights are not a good choice for keeping the anemones that you have. Consider upgrading to VHO (very high output) fluorescent or perhaps one of the other popular higher intensity lighting options (Halides, PC's, T5's etc.)

You might want to try feeding your anemone frozen HUFA enriched Mysids. You can usually target feed an anemone easier at night when fish won't eat the food before the anemone grabs it. Without proper lighting, your anemones are depending heavily on feedings for their survival. Whatever you do, don't stop feeding them and start reseaching your lighting options.
These are general recommendations. I hope they steer you in the right direction. Good luck- you have some nice looking anemones and fish.

The white with purple tips looks like a bleached heteractis crispa (sebae) to me, although it could be a light tan and just a poor pic. I see them white all the time in stores around here, but haven't heard anyone saying they have lasted much longer than six months if that in that condition. The yellow one may also be an h. crispa, but in slightly better condition. My .02, at any rate, with that lighting, you may want to continue trying to feed them small pieces of shimp or silversides.

I agree, the white with purple tips looks like a sebae. I was also wondering if a flash was used to make it look bleached.

Safir: I'm not familiar with the Condy Anemone. I have been told by many professionals in this hobby that a bright white anemone is not a healthy one. Also I have read several articles that states this.

Thanks for all the posts!
I do plan on getting mh lighting, but it will have to wait a little for that since I am moving and plan on getting a nice big tank to put them in, I don't want to spend the dough on it when i'm just getting a much larger tank.
The purple tip and carnation have been living in that lighting for 6 1/2 months and 3 months respectively so they'll have to last another couple months.
What do you use when you are target feeding? tounges or your fingers?

Either. A turkey baster is another option. FWIW neither of your anemones is a Condylactis.

Sometimes I use a flash, I don't remember if I did or not for this picture. But it is definatly white with purple tips and has been living that way for 6 1/2 months.
The color in the 3rd picture best represents its normal color.

Uh..yeah..about that.. Those arent condys..and a PC fixture will not help at all.

Just got a turky baster, fed them some krill, the purple tip apreciatted it and ate it up. My clown and shrimp stole most from the carnation, but i think he got some.
Keep posting I still want more opinions on whether it is bleached or just supposed to be white, it seems to be living happily in this color for 6 1/2 months.
