Angel or Tang in IM Nuvo 40

I was contemplating a Flame Angel or Yellow Tang to add as my final fish in my Nuvo 40. I DO have a few LPS and softies started..
Current Stock:

2-paired blacker ice clowns
3-BG Chromis
1- YWG

Anyone have any insight?
 
Depends, what are you looking for? Royal grammas are pretty cool, and brightly colored. What do you mean by "trophy" really?
 
If you have a large amount of liverock a Golden Angel or a Pair of them from LADD. They are a beautiful fish that doesn't venture very far from the rocks so they are not you typical grazer that requires more room. Mine took a year to come out in the open. but only to eat. The only question is how mean are your clowns?
 
The only nips have come from my smallest clown to my hand...he nips at my hand whenever it's in the tank...as far as others he's good..
 
If you're looking for a relatively reef safe angel that stays small, I don't think you can go wrong with an African Flameback Angel. I have one for three months as the "trophy" fish in my 28g Nano Cube.

Was very shy the first week or so, but is now very active, constantly exploring every nook and cranny of the tank. Peaceful, eats great and hasn't touched any of my softies and LPS (yet).

LA lists that fish as needing 55 gallons. I don't see any Angels that can be in a 40 gallon. Also isn't that tank not a real 40? Doesn't it have a back part fish can't swim into?
 
The rear part of the Nano Cube is the filter area, which counts for maybe four gallons of volume. So around 24 gallons of volume in the display area.

From what I read Flameback Angels rarely get bigger than two inches. Mine is just under that. I have over 40 pounds of live rock which seems to satisfy its needs for space. If I do start having problems with it I can move it to my 150g. I'm pretty anal about tank maintenance and usually feed three times a day, which both help to keep the fish happy in a smallish space.

I think a Flameback will do fine in a 40g with a good amount of rockwork. But yes, there's a chance it may not be happy and need to be moved to a bigger tank. But as far as Angels go, it would be the best bet.
 
If you are looking for a small angel, what about a cherub angel. I had one in my 30 and he was awesome, always cruising, in and out and through the rocks.

If you really want a angel then the only ones suited in size are Pygmy angels Centropyge acanthops (flameback), C. argi (cherub) C. aurantonotus (fireball) - all other dwarf angels get significantly bigger.
Even the pygmies can get quite large - I've seen 3in C. acanthops and that's already quite a big fish.
If it was me I would dump the Chromis and rather add a pair or a group of 3 pygmy angels (all same species). They will form a harem and behave much more interestingly than a single. I would start with 1 or 2 small and 1 medium.
But that may already be pushing the limits.

I have the IM Nuvo Concept Abyss which is rated 20 gallons but took less than 3 five gallon canisters to fill (~15 gallon) - and I have only one fist sized rock in there and 2 Catalina Gobies.
So I kind of doubt that the Nuvo 40 actually holds 40 gallon.
 
Couldn't agree more with throewer. The dims on the display of that tank are 24x16x19. Theoretically, with the water below 19in of course, that gives you about ~28 gallons of water. If you HAVE to have an angel, dump the chromis and do some type of small group. However, I would suggest staying in the "nano fish" category on LA with that tank footprint..just doesn't have enough swimming room. There are plenty of cool fish though in that category, could add a shrimp in with your goby, firefish, basslet, possum wrasse, etc..
 
I've had my Flame in display for about a month now.He is definitely the best "roamer" I have..as of now the best purchase thus far..my chromis and clowns kinda chill in a few certain spots in the tank..the Angel dips and darts through the rocks and hasn't bothered any of the small frags I have as of yet...thanks for all the suggestions..if I had a few more with his temperament and activity level the tank would definitely benefit visually

LOL, who suggested the Flame?

Reading over - everyone told you not to get a Flame for such a small tank.
