Angelfish suggestions and behaviors you have noticed

I have wanted to add an angelfish to my reef for a while and I have made an effort to remove expensive zoanthids and all the lps from my tank. I have some blue clove polyps everywhere that I can't seem to get rid of ...sigh. I really wanted to return to an sps dominant tanker regardless. Anyways I was just looking for some experiences you have had with your large angelfish in general. Such as what size tank you have , what corals you keep , what other fish you keep with them, how long you have kept them, diet , etc. etc.

I guess maybe the suggestions should have been left out I am really just looking for discussion and experience :)

How big is your current system? I've had some angel who would only eat what I fed them & others that have made zoos disappear fast. The behaviors are varied - they're truly individuals, imo.

That has been my experience with many species of fish...individuals. In response to your question about my current system it's a 60 in x 24x 24 with a 50 gallon sump. I was really trying to hear others experiences whether it's very large angelfish or dwarf angelfish.

I have almost always had a Flame dwarf angel in my reef tanks, and most of the time a Potters too. Not sure why, necessarily, but in really have not ever had any major nipping problems so I keep lots of zoos, a few LPS and a lot of SPS. I do tend to keep my tanks on the overstocked end when it comes to fish, so perhaps these fish are too busy with tankmates to nip much. I also feed pretty heavily, and have tended to have large tanks.

Angels that I have tried in the past that I would not attempt again in a reef include LemonPeel, Eibli, Regal, Narvachus and Asfur. All of these proved problematic to zoos and LPS, though the Asfur was also great at eating Aptasia and majanos.

I have kept flame angels, coral beauty and potters. they have never bothered any corals or clams. they like to nip on rocks. the only large angel I hv kept is the emperor and even that didn't bother any corals or clams.

How did these angels do with sps in your tank?

Well that's interesting I am just curious as to what you feed your angelfish.

I have been considering adding a regal angel eventually but I'm not sure if I will get a different tank soon so I am holding off adding anything for a while. However, I am enjoying some of you who have your own experiences to share.

I have a Watanabe angel that has not even looked at a coral. I also have a Flameback angel that occasionally nips at my pocillipora but does not damage. Hasn't messed with anything else.

I currently have 6 angels in my 150 gal mixed reef (60X24X24). 5 Dwarf (Lemonpeel, Flameback, Eibli, Cherub & Coral Beauty) and 1 Blue juv. They all nip to one extent or the other, with the Lemonpeel & Blue being my biggest headaches. And there are some corals I just cannot keep with them - zoas, Candy Cane, Blastos & my Xmas tree rock all come to mind. But they don't really nip much at any of my softies, SPS and Euphyllia/Brains for some reason. At least not to the point where I really notice it.

One reason may be I purposely overfeed them - 2-3x daily. And I have cyano on the sand to show for it. ;) I also have another reef where I relocate corals if need be.

So, while it can be done, you may find yourself making trade-offs (like cyano & re-homing certain corals) in order to do it.

How did these angels do with sps in your tank?

Regal and Asfur were together and SPS were fine. LemonPeel was a problem with just about everything, and as stunning as I think they are I'd not keep one again unless I was going FOWLR. Narvachus and Eibli were in my tank before SPS became available in the hobby.

Cool this is a lot of good information so far. Most of it coincides with what is expected with a couple anamolies. We have the emperor angel that touched no coral and I still would like to know about how old the fish was and how long it was kept by you nycbob. Humble fish and ca1ore great info. Thanks for sharing.
