Angels in a reef tank

I've been looking for fish for my new tank and I really want an Angel(or two). Not a dwarf, a "large" one. I know they aren't concidered "reef safe", but I've seen lots of beautiful tanks with Angels in them and im jelous

The current fish list that will be going in so far is:
1 Lavendar Tang ~4-5"
1 Unknown tang that i got from AT ~3"
4 Lyretail Anthias
1 Black blenny

My other fish I thnk I will end up selling/giving away, but im still unsure if I'll keep my SaddleBack Clowns. They dont really pair up, so I might replace them with somthing different.

I plan on adding maybe a Purple tang, some kind of Butterfly's, more Anthias, and a bunch of Wrasses.

The tank is only 190G but I would like a heavy bio-load because the skimmer I'm using is kinda big for the tank. I plan to feed often in order to keep all the fish happy and away from my corals. :)

So anyway, any suggestions for an Angel that would be borderline safe?

Thanks!

A Watanabei? Max size is 6" if i remember right... not really considered a dwarf I dont think.

I got a female, havent touch anything

So, I know you are looking for more large borderline angels that would make people say "what!? in a reef?!"
but a pair of Watanabei Angels are awesome and they are reef safe. The male gets pretty chunky and large.
If that's a little outside your budget, then Scissortails are similar. I have a female in my tank and she is beautiful. The males get big.

There pretty cool, but im looking for the really colorful ones. I was looking at the Regal, Juve Blueline, and a Juvi Scribbled.

Bad ideas?

I had a Majestic in my reef for 2 months and he did not pick on any corals, he is now in a friends reef and still has not picked at anything for over 6 months. Like any fish it is hit or miss. I have SPS LPS and softy's. Your chances will be greater if you have a SPS only tank.

Genicanthus is your best bet, G. caudovittatus or bellus have some color(more than watanabei anyways)

other than that a regal or goldflake might be worth a shot.

Elliott used to keep a huuuuge one in his system. I don't remember what type it was. He was gorgeous and used to grunt real loud.

The goldflake is cool but pretty pricey.. The Lamark's body shape reminds me of a chromis. Same goes for the Watanabei.

Grunt?? I'm lost

It is mainly SPS, but the LPS i do have i like alot. :) . Understandable that every fish is different, but do you think as long as I feed often it will lessen the chances of it getting coral happy? How often does your friend feed?

Blueline all the way!

Say word huh!! I'm diggin em'! :)

The larger angels are known for making a grunting sound, normally you only hear it when you take them out of the water.

Yes my imperator totally makes a thumping sound when my xanthurus tries to intimidate him. To this day I miss my show Blueline :'( (but don't tell my other Angels) ;) Angels are personally my favorite and I have a dozen plus currently. There are no 100% Reefsafe Angels. I think seen or heard of many that are supposed to be safe but aren't and vice versa. Let me prequalify this by saying someone will dispute these, but as far as Angels here goes

1.Swallowtail Male/Female pr about $1-125pr (the kind Tif has)
2. Red Sea Regal usually $70-100
3. Blueline easily $150+
4. Navarcus/Majestic $75+
5. Blueface about $100
Many more you could try but as you can see most are not cheap!
If you have a price range as well that would help.
Besides myself I know Nick at Reef Culture shares the same love of Angels and reef ones especially!

Thats tripped out! :strange: .... Why was it doing it? I've never heard about one making noises..

Elliott where are you for this...

Oh yes, I have a large Emperor Angel and he grunts whenever he is being fed.
Always has. Not sure if he is just excited or if it is part of his normal eating behavior.

btw, he will most likly be coming up for sale soon as I consolidate my tanks into the new build.
He has always been my favorite fish, but I can't safely keep him with softies and LPS. If I was going all SPS, then I would keep him.

I had a Majestic who was good and didnt pick at corals or fish. I also had a Koran and the Queen Angel. I only had problems with the Queenie. She ate at everything after the first 2 weeks. She loved to eat my zoas and constantly picked at the wellsophyllia's. I think she taught my big blue hippo tang that coral was good to eat!!! I had to evict him too! I bought all 3 together and they all 3 got along fine. I spent over 350.00 at About the Reef that day on all 3 fish! They had an angel sale too!!! Still spent over 350 after the 30% off deal they had. I miss my Queenie! she was getting her streamers in!

Once per day, one cube of frozen ( Mysis and angel )

Thanks for all the input.

Im thinking about a Majestic, Blue Line, and a Regal. Too many?

I've heard that the BlueLines aren't very hardy, so im still on the fence about that one.

Do it! All three. Of course that would be best accomplished by adding all three at the same time to avoid fighting. That would hit the wallet pretty hard. If it were me, I'd switch out the majestic with a multifasciatus (multi barred) angel. That's just me though.
Best of luck whatever you decide to do. And POST PICTURES!
