Another 225 Tank Project!

Well, I admit I may have overestimated my power needs, but better to have more than I need than end up with not enough. Plus I was going to add one more circuit just in case I needed to add something in the future I hadn't planned on.

Metal Halides (3 250 DE) 6.5
Fans (2) <1
VHO Actinics (4 60") 4.9
Main Pump 1.6
Closed Loop Pump 2.2
Sea Swirls (2 or 4) <1
Power Heads (2 if needed) <1
Skimmer Pump 1.3
Heaters (1000 watts) 4.3
Refugium Light 1.3
Refugium Powerhead <1
Controller <1
Dosing Pump <1
Chiller (1/3hp-1/2hp) 10 (should be on separate circuit)
Total = 2 15 amp circuits for equipment plus 1 for the chiller and one extra just in case.

Platapus,
I mean this in the nicest possible way...
I hate you!
This tank is awesome, and the skills you've demonstrated in carpentry are nothing short of amazing. The electrical and plumbing are just icing on the cake. I'm in the process of building a stand for my lil 58 gallon. I've been using 4x4's and 2x6's to overengineer and build a water proof box that everything will sit in in order to revent flooding from damging the floors, (live in an apartment) In my wildest dreams, I couldnt concieve of all the amazing things you've been able to accomplish thus far. Hats off man......
But I still hate you!

DO NOT do this. My tank recently crashed because I had a valve on the return for the same reason. While I was at work something got caught in the drain pipe and my tank overflowed. All of the water was replaced with a milky solution of kalkwasser from my reactor. Here is the link: http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=310898

Travis, Sorry about the crash. I will send you a PM in order not to steal the thread.

Platapus,

Any advice on making a Dorso? The problem is that I have 3 1" bulkheads in the over flow and I am not sure I can fit 3 doso's in that confined space.

Im just now preparing for primer, I will hopefulloy have some pic to post tonight. I have been serching for paint, and preparing my garage. I have also got a little side tracked on home improvements too, but Im trying to stay focused on the tank since Im so close to installation.

Murfman - Soon!

MickeyDee - It is always good to have more that you need ;)

more-ray - Thank you, and I cant wait for fish and coral either!

maxxII - Thanks! It feels good to be hated :D

02/16/03 - Paint: Finished the stand and started on the primer. space is limited for painting, Im going to have to prime and paint section by section. The prime is Zinsner B-I-N Shellac based.

Platapus,
Since your attention to detail is now legendary, would you mind explaining why you are using the primer, paint, and top coat (if any) you have selected? Did you consider using treated wood such as Dricon?

Thanks for your time!

haha...legendary?

I dont see anything wrong with using treated wood such as dricon or green board, I choose not to, if it catches on fire, the tank will put it out...I hope :eek1: Most stands I see for sale are just made out of laminated particleboard.

Actually this is why Im using the BIN shellac primer. It is 52% solid, and goes on pretty thick, it seals new wood, and will cover any stains, odors, and what ever else. The main reason for using this is that I wanted to make all the cabinet work out of MDF because I find it very accurate to work with, however it must be sealed properly.

The plan is to put on a thich coat of primer, sand with 240, then add 2 (maybe 3)coats of a high gloss black, I picked it up last night, but dont remeber the name, Ill post it tonight.

ok, i am sure this is an obvious question, but I have not been able to figure it out. What in the world is MDF? I know it is a type of wood, but is it particle board, plywood, somethin else? Thanks.

Platapus,
Thanks for your reply! I am considering building my hood out of Dricon treated wood after reading the thread about all the VHO endcaps catching on fire! Holy smoking tank!!!
I plan on using pressure treated wood for the framing and then maple/birch plywood which will be stained for the vaneer. I am trying to figure out how to seal/paint/protect the interior of both the stand and the canopy. Will you be using a white, high-temp paint inside your canopy?

Thanks for all your time on this!

I do not know how you have time to work on your tank with all of the updates you keep giving us and putting into your website.

Thanks!

Carl

Platapus,

I want to add a standpipe (3) for my 120. Any recomendations... I was wondering if the dorso stand pipe fits all aplications!! Does not specify in the web page :(

Mexican Hermit - Search RC, I believe that person who designed it is a member of RC, there are many modified versions of the durso to fit specific applications.

Here is an how to:
http://www.geocities.com/bigreefproject/Durso.html

If I remeber correctly you have 3 holes in one overflow..... with that in mind a stockman stand pipe would probably work better for you, however, I have never built one.

Here is a link to stockman:

Carl_in_Florida - I dont know either, I have a full time job, and am in the middle of home renivation! I swamped.

Is there anything that you dont know how to do??? JK- Your tank is truly awsome. Glad t see it is all pulling together as you planned.

I have just been painting away, no pics to post this time.
