Another Anthias Question ....

Grizzled & Cynical
I have seven in my tank, four bimac females and a trio of Bartletts that started out as three females but is now two males and a female. LFS just got in a stunning bimac male that I'd love to add. Am I asking for trouble? I suspect so ....

As you would expect, the only potential issue is with one of the existing females not tolerating the intruder/new guest and converts to a male.

The only other consideration (not knowing your LFS) is that Bimac Males don't always transfer/ ship well and can be challenging during quarantine/ acclimation.

What can the bartlett's do...............

This... and this.

I honestly wouldn't do it. One of your females will eventually change.

How long have you had the bimacs? If you haven't had them long they may not have had time to determine dominance. In a 265 tank ( guessing this is the tank you are putting them in). You may be ok if they are fairly new. Once the males get acclimated they can hold their own. In my old 260 I added new anthias almost weekly for a good period of time until I was at the 50 fish mark. I wouldn't recommend that but it is doable and I seldom had issues with fighting.

I had them in QT for 10 weeks and now they have been in my 265 for about a month. Any new male I'd have to also run through QT so we'd be talking another 8-10 weeks at least.

That may be risky. I would let them decide who wants to turn male and be done. Bimacs are awesome fish...probably my favorite Anthias. Looking for a group right now for my new system. Once established they are striking fish! Good luck!

Yeah, mine too! Male at my LFS is just a spectacular looking specimen - hope he's sold next time I go in because, against my better judgment, I'm likely to bring him home if he's not.

Thanks for the thoughts!

Nice! Bimacs, lyretails ..... Bartletts? Male bimac has the 'I'm the boss' expression for sure.
A bit hard to see what is in the picture but bimacs, squas, Bartletts, hutchi, dispars and carberris where some species in the display. Overstocked for sure but it worked
