Another Custom Stand Construction Thread- 120 Gal.

Gorgeous stand! I wish I was half as talent as you. Anyway, I am new to woodworking, so I have a question for you. Did you have to true (with a jointer) any of your wood before using it? I found that most of the wood at my local lumber store (HD and Lowes) aren't very true.

I am thinking about rebuilding my stand in a couple of years, but try to use strictly glue and biscuit join for any surface that is exposed, therefore there won't be any nail holes showing.

Great job!

Minh

thanks for the inspiration!!!

thanks for the inspiration!!!

i'm building this stand for my friend for his 120g too. i can't wait to see the canopy and design, hopefully, i'll have the tools to make it. if you don't mind, would let me know some of the unusual tools you might be using if any??? Thanks a lot!! here's some pics so far from day 1, ran out of wood and screws??!!

I have a jointer but did not use it on this project. The lumber I purchased had one straight edge already so all I had to do was rip the other edge using my table saw.

I didn't use any unusual tools except the pocket hole jig. I have a biscuit jointer and considered using it but I like the pocket hole method better. Still no visible hardware but you don't have to wait on glue to dry. Just screw pieces together and keep working.

As far as tools used on this project; table saw, circular saw, miter saw, router, pocket hole jig, sander, brad nailer and of course a power drill/screwdriver

That looks like a strong stand you have started. I like the bike in the background even better.

i'm selling it (the bike) you interested?? i'm in CT. LOL, but i am going to sell it this spring (or try to anyway). it's hard once it gets warm enough to ride.

Question for u guys. Wouldnt it be easier to mortise a 4X4 Douglas Fir for your subframe , rather than join alll those 2x4s?

THe canopy is looking great! :)

what are your plans for positioning lighting inside it?
How will the canopy open?
Is it difficult to build these beutiful stands and canopys, time consuming, or both?

Thanks for the help.
This project really is turning out great! :)

I'm thinking of going with 2- 250w MH in Lumenarc reflectors as my lighting choice. If I do this, I'll probably use 14k or 20k bulbs and not use any VHO supplementation. Either way, there will be 2- MH's and possibly 2 VHO's attached to the top of the canopy. I have another thread started asking opinion of an open top, or closed top. Not sure what I want to do. I'm trying to keep the weight down on this thing but I don't know how much light would escape an open top.

This canopy will have doors that cover the front opening you see in the pictures. There will also be a door on each end of the canopy. And the entire front I just built will flip up completely. When I built the canopy for my current 65 gal tank, I did not build in this feature. And everytime I have to stick my arm in the tank, I have to reach over the bottom rail (which hurts) then I get water all over it when my are comes out. Plus this tank will be taller and I'll need all of the access I can get.

As far as difficulty, it is not too bad if you have some general woodworking skills and the right tools. In my opinion, having the right tool for the job makes all the difference. But it is very time consuming. It has taken me quite a while because I have been busy at work and I have two boys that want Dad's time as well.

Just curious, did you use the Kreg Pocket hole jig to join the boards at the edges? I like that look, very professional looking.

cool. I have seen lumanerics on 120's before. They do an awsome job.
I cant wait to see the completes setup. Its gunna be killer! :)

I ordered the doors for the canopy today. Should have them in a week or so. I hope to get all of the trim on the canopy this week and begin the staining process.

i'm following your lead. I think i might try to make the doors though, if i can find the right wood i wanna use. I went with pine b/c of cost and availability in the Northeast. Canopy looks good!!! You've been a great help!! Here are some images of the stand i built this weekend... i need to fine sand and add the top rail trim, however, the door it's going thru is only 30" so i'm at 29 right now and don't want to take a chance scratchin on the way in, so it will have to be added in the living room.
first one is for the bike fans..
