Another H. Magnifica

They like good flow, but I would go with the second one. The first one looks a little "hurricane force." Who knows, maybe they would like a variation between the two. Mine never move and the flow is more similar to your second video. In the first video the flow is so strong that any food you feed it might get blown away. Sorry to hear about the other one. I could tell from your description it wasn't splitting, but I was hopeful it would recover. I think established ones can repair from damage--in fact I know they can. But new H. mags aren't too resilient it seems.

I think either flow is fine for them, but you have to be careful with a new one to not have any flow directly at the mouth. That can do lots of damage if they are gaping. I would go with the second option for now. Once it is established and growing, higher flow will produce longer elegant tentacles that I personally prefer.

In my opinion, it is not the little tweakings of flow light or water that make or break these guys, it is something infectious that they pick up (or have and become injured enough to be susceptible to) in collection and transport. Just provide good conditions to nurse them back to top shape and hope for the best.

I would recommend not feeding the anemones for several weeks or until they are looking 100% all of the time.

Good luck and Gigem :) (class of 98, Whoop!)

This should be a video of my Magnifica at two weeks in my tank. I change the direction of the flow every few days. There is also a SCWD to cause alternating flow.

If you get a photobucket account all you do is click the video link and it copies it automatically. Really easy..... then all you do is paste it on your thread

Thanks Flighty and Gary I always listen to what you two have to say. I also tell others to listen to you over the one tank wonders that get on here and post as if they know whats best. I am extremely upset about the other one.... I told him not to pull any off the devider. I almost barfed when i saw how big and beutifull it was and then i looked at the foot and almost barfed again. Also this mag has not had a gaping mout yet... As soon as I put it in the tank it was fine. It has partially deflated but never fully and when it does, its mouth doesn't open. I just want it to look extended but am happy with it either way. Thanks and Gig'em.

the one tank wonders thing wasn't directed at anyone in this thread, I just see it all the time when people that don't even have experiance with a certain fish or coral or anemone get on here and post bad advice... And as far as Magnificas go Flighty, Delphinous (SP?) , and Gary B have the most experiance and I was just reiterating that. I hate when they say somthing and somone post after them and say that they are totally wrong..

Looks good Elegance. I don't think you need to change a thing. One thing I see in your vid that is a great sign is the anemone holding a shape of its own a little like there is a hand under the anemone and the folds of it drape down between the fingers. It makes canyons of tentacles for the flow (and any drifting food) to go through. You see that on healthy magnificas which have grown large. I bet yours has the potential to get huge without splitting. I wouldn't hesitate to up the flow with that guy.

Looks even bigger in the video! Mine is still very small, about the size of my hand with fingers spread. Maybe thats why it hasn't been holding itself up like yours and flightys.....?

A couple of old videos here.

You can just see in the background two clones of the same one orange based anemone. The one on the right is in higher flow and the one on the left is more sheltered. You might be able to see the difference in tentacle length between the three, the longest tentacles being on the purple base one in the foreground in the highest flow.

In the wild they experience both much higher and much lower flow than this.

I can't really tell the health from your video, but they do behave differently when they are that small. Having a floppy looking body is a bad sign regardless of the size. What I can see of the tentacles looks pretty good though. Give it some more time to get adjusted and see if it climbs up and spreads out.

Thanks. I hope you're right about the growing large without splitting. I would rather work on raising them from planulae than having them split. I was hoping to get one of the larger solitary forms, but don't know them well enough to tell one from the other. The "canyons of tentacles" observation of yours seems to work great. He is always eating something to small for me to see. (eye sight ain't what it use to be:rolleyes: ) This seems to break the rule of thumb that, the larger the predator the larger the prey. Thanks again for all your help.
P.S. Those videos are awesome!

Mine was about 6 or 8 inches and pretty much laid on the rock for the first week or so. If you look through my thread, you can see how mine started holding itself up higher and spreading out over time. I've had it for one month now and it's 10 to 12 inches across, depending on time of day and the mood he's in.

Thanks GaryGB

ok Came to the office to find that the Mag was deflated and the mouth was open, But not gaping....... Looks about the same time frame as yours elegance.

Here's another attempt to post the video. I didn't like the way it was being kinda jet washed on the left side, so I changed the flow a little after this video.

Beautiful animal. Great job so far, I have high hopes for you.
