Another lesson learned!

Sticks Suck!
While I dip every zoanthid colony and inspect it diligently before putting it in my system, I have not been doing it with SPS frags.....

Well, I just discovered Monti eating Nudis on two different frags of Monti caps that I got at the frag swap:mad2:

They where from two different people....So if you guys got Monti caps at the swap, INSPECT THEM !!! They have already eaten two dime size areas out of one, on the other frag, I found one underneath.

I assume there are more that I haven't found. Anybody has experience on how to get rid of them?

They are white and about 1 to 2 millimeters long.

I wonder what I'm gonna find next

Andrea, I had a couple of pieces in QT with the monti eating nudis around this time last year. Came from a very popular online aquaculture facility, which really surprised me. I tried manual removal with a magnifying glass, sharp point tweezers, straight pins, etc. I killed/removed dozens, but they always came back. I ended up tossing two frags in the trash, wasn't worth risking infection of the other frags in the order, or the big colonies in my display.

I'm not aware of any proven effective method for getting rid of them. Some people say heavy doses of Levamisol (sp?) work, others say it doesn't. For a big piece, I would break off any eaten areas, and take a wide margin of healthy tissue with it. Cross your fingers, and hope you got all of them. For a tiny piece, you may just have to write it off.

Rogger I got a few, I have them in a small container if you want them.

I was just reading up on them and found a few articles where people have gotten rid of them with "Tetra Marin Oomed", but I don't think that's available here...

Maybe Reef Dip? Flatworm Exit? Lugol's?

sorry to hear about the nudi's,

I had them a while back, wasn't fun, however I was succecful at getting rid of them.
first I bought a seaweed wrasse, I was told the wrasse would eat zoanthid nudi's(which I have not had, yet!) So I thought I'd give it a try on the montipora nudi. I never saw the wrasse eat pick the nudis off the montipora, not even sure if it eat any. The seaweed wrasse is a very efficient hunter .
I had a handful of montipora cap frags that came down with the nudi's . I bought some frags locally thinking I was getting a good deal, now i know why. I also have an encrusting montipora that the nudi's do not touch.
So freshwater dips do NOT work, kills the nudi's and the montipora.
Luckily I only had frags that could be easily removed and replaced in the tank I would strongly recommend removing all montipora for the dipping proccess, the rest is easy

Lugol's Iodine, I'd put about ten drops or so in a cup of tank water, enough water to cover the frags. Dip them in this solution for 15 minutes. After the 15 minutes I would scrub both sides of the cap with a soft toothbrush, then place them back in the tank.
I did this every other day for one month and the nudi's are gone.

hope this helps and good luck

You mean a Seagrass Wrasse? Oh boy, I had Patrick order me one when I had the Zoa eating nudis. That fish tore my tank to shreds.....it turned over everything that wasn't glued down. I ended up giving him back.

I am dipping them right now in Tank Water with FWE and Coral Dip, I'll repeat that tommorrow or do a Lugol's. I used a black bowl, and stuff is coming off, but they are sooooo tiny, even with my strongest magnifying glass, I can't make out if it's nudis or just crud.

Squish it with a pair of tweezers. If the result is gooey and slimey, it was a nudi. If not, it was just crud. :D

yea! that's it, seagrass wrasse, seaweed wrasse(?)
mines pretty mellow, doesn't flip too much over anymore

I couldn't see the nudi's , Couldn't figure out what was wrong with the montipora. google led me to the nudi's, wasn't till I flipped some over and saw all the egg clusters

This is some major macro, they are about 2 milimeters long

Wow, awesome shot.
(I gotta get me a Rebel someday.)

Andrea, how much was the seagrass wrasse from Pat?
Did you recently give it back to him, as in he might still have it?
I'd like to "lease" him for a while to get rid of my zoa nudis instead of going thru all this manual labor.

LOL, John, these weren't shot with the Rebel, but it's predecessor, a S2IS, also Canon and an awesome camera for half the price.

No, the Seagrass desaster took place before he even moved to the new store. It's a real pretty fish, but believe me, it came straight from hell......I'll put up with a lot, but that fish was too much for me. I'd rather scan and suck them out for the next year before I would consider another fish like "Mikey".

ive had them too from frags i got from the auction.

there werent too many, i was able to tweeze a few out.some tended to kinda break though leaving some pieces of them

you can also dab a drop of superglue on them directly on the cap as well.

lol rogger, theres not too many people that actually ASK for parasites for there tank lol.
