Another log of a Newbie starting out with TBS rock!

I dont think you guys need to talk me out of it, I have talked myself out of it. I just cannot afford it right now, I have too many other expenses right now. None of those expenses are mandatory expenses, I would be mostly trading one fun expense for another fun expense.

I think come September I will be ready to possibly upgrade the FO tank to a nice 180 gallon setup and rotate the reef into the 75 gallon. I will also have a few grand extra in order to do it, so I shall wait until then.

Thought I would give another update.

Everything is going good.

People say this saltwater stuff is hard............

Actually, I am having one problem I hope someone can help me with. My gereen brain is showing more and more skeleton over time. It is the only thing in the tank I am having difficulty with right now. I am unsure if it is a water quality issue, light issue, feeding issue or the peppermint shrimp are nibbling it to death.

I have moved it higher onto the rocks so it can get more light. I hope that helps.

I wouldnt want to feed it spot, Spot is way to big to feed to a green brain coral, and besides, she might give the coral fleas.

I just did a little testing and fed the tank. It is still AMAZING to me the number of creatures that come out during a tank feeding. I have DOZENS of porcelain crabs that come scurring out of the rockwork at feeding time. You can see dozens of tentacles from brittle stars pop up through the sand. Lots of snails that were hiding in the sand come out. I saw a small gorilla crab out today while feeding. I had never seen him, I know I have a pistol shrimp, he has been in there since day one back in October, I have never seen him, ever.

I find piles of sand in the tank each morning, nice fine, white piles of sand. I do not know what is making them, I have never seen the creauture that makes them but he has been making them regularly since I placed the second half in way back in Novemeber.

I was also able to fish out two more spawn of Satan, a.k.a Peppermint Shrimp. One went into the QT tank and the other went into the Lion Fishe's belly :)

I just find it amazing the amount of life and the incredible number of creatures in the tank, and the number of creatures I have never seen, even after 6 months of owning the tank. Amazing, just amazing.

I want to do another TBS tank, just to get more cool stuff :)

I was just sitting and admiring my tanks once again. I found it amazing that I have pods in my QT tank. All over the glass, little white bugs. I have no LR or LS in the tank. It has been transformed from a QT tank to the "tank of misfit reef creatures." - Hey, that would be a good thread name!!

Anyways, I have transfered 3 urchins, 3 peppermint shrimp, 1 mantis shrimp and a red emerald crab from the reef to the QT and I guess some pods hitched a ride and now I have a pod population in the QT tank.

I do have to say that it is the cleanest tank I have, the sand is brilliant white, the tank gets only moderate algae growth. Probably has something to do with the number of cleaner organisims vs. the bio load on the tank :)

In the reef tank I saw another teeny, tiny translucent shrimp. I really do think it is a peppermint shrimp. It looks like it, it wont last long though :)

Ok, I have a plan. I could glass in the door leading to my room, then spray fiberglass over the walls, fill with water and sand and voila!!! Instant giant fish tank.

What do you think?

Hah, the school district would be paying those.

I just need to convince the Principal it would be a good idea.

Feeding the brain

Feeding the brain

I dont usually feed the brain, only when I think about. So, I have decided to feed it brine and mysis three times a weeek, mon, wed, and fri. I have it higher in the tank, just about 4 inches from the water surface and about 4-5 inches above that is the light. Hopefully it will recover.
