Another one bites the dust........

...........huge mexican turbo that is. I need an algae eater in my n Wennerae sump tank otherwise it becomes a slimey mess. A big mexican turbo usually lasts about 6 months. The turbo is safe unless it gets where the n wennerae can whack away at his leisure until the shell is cracked. The last one lasted less than a month :( .

Either turbos these days have thinner shells or my mantis figured out how to open them more quickly.

Off to the LFS for a bigger turbo snail............

maby try a cowrie their shells are much stronger

My harleyquin tusk will kill every last turbo but he hasnt killed a cowrie
so either their shell is tuff or they just taste bad

Most likely your mantis is getting smarter =D and they love the taste of snails. so what i would do if i was you is put in an urchin!
they are like lawnmowers when it comes to algae and are much more affective than turbo's. I have a Long spine black urchin(sorry dont know the actual name) in my O.S. tank. she has bumped into it a few times which she didnt like but hasnt had the urge to whack it yet

That is a diadema urchin. Urchins are typically safe in mantis tanks. Astrea snails also typically have pretty thick shells and should be ok with mantises.

Ya try a astreas and conries. Their shell seems pretty thicker than other snails. Good luck finding some good snails for your mantis tank!

Note that those long-spine urchins have two things against them. First is their size -- including spines, they get over a foot across (I've seen one you couldn't get into a five-gallon bucket). Next, they are toxic. You really, really don't want to get stuck by one.

I would not keep these things in any aquarium I am maintaining, unless it's big enough to scuba dive in.

so what would one do if they did get stuck by one, because that happend to me this morning, i just pulled out the spine

Urchins are for the most part harmless if your not allergic. I would just soak it in hot water to help nutrealize (sp?) the toxins and hope i'm not allergic :)

I like the Cowery idea. My mantis's don't have any problem opening up Astreas and they flip Turbos onto their backs, and wait.
