Another...your tank can be dangerous thread.

I started wearing gloves after my rose stun me and my hand swelled a bit. Plus I found that my corals, especially the Suharsonoi, does not receed after touching it with gloves. It used to when I handled it with my hand. And my hand doesn't smell like corals after I'm done.

Not exactly.

I said that the blood culture ITSELF is unreliable and often incorrect. A positive culture can be truly positive or contaminated, but a negative culture in no way means that there are not circulating pathogens in the blood.

I also said that all treatment of patients should be guided by clinical observation. If not, I could just sit back in my den with a web cam and have nurses fax me lab results and email me X-ray and EKG files.

I had a simular exerience with my anemone when it grabbed my hand as I pulling soemthing out of the tank. went to the doctors two days later when i could not move my hand. I looked online and between me and the doctor we discoverd that I was allergic to the nematocysts that are used in catching prey. Now I have trouble putting my hand in the tank as I happened when I touched my brittle stars too. I hope that this helps someone learn about this. Thank you for starting this thread

something like this happened to me 2 yrs ago,i was handling live rock.i felt what can best be described as a minor bee sting,i looked at my finger and there was the smallest bit of blood..about an hour later my whole arm was sore and hurt quite a bit when moved in any direction,the whole time my bride insisting i go to e.r.about 3 hrs later when i could no longer stand the pain and the red line traveling up my arm rather quickly i went to the e.r.when entering i passed out on the floor!!!woke up to a doctor telling me i was lucky as something was poisoning my blood,i explained what i do (lfs owner)he said haaaa! and called another doctor,long story short is a few shots of some antibiotic,but what did the trick he told me was anihistamine,(if spelled right),cleared me up but i still bear a nasty scar on my finger because of this.
 
nevermind, I didn't see that there were like hundreds of other posts past the first page. Nothing new to contribute except that Mycobacterium marinum is definately a bacterium that does take weeks to grow in the lab and I have previously heard of people having infections like this from reef tanks.
 
Just wanted to mention that you do not have to be allergic to get a terrible reaction from an anemone sting. It happened to me after a dip in the ocean and I am not allergic at all. My lower right leg swelled up and it felt like a water ballon covered in cardboard just under the skin, all the way from the ancle to the knee. It got to be around 2 -3 times its normal size and it tock several months before it was back to normal. As I said I am not allergic to anemones, or to anything for that matter, but it surely got to me anyway.

As I am writing this I am realizing that I am still not wearing gloves even after what happened to me ...hahahahaha. How dumb can you get!:rolleyes:

Some organism/toxin/etc must have entered thru there.

I heard somewhere before (it could've been here at RC) that if you have a cut on your hand or finger and you stick your hand in the tank you can pick up any disease that is in the tank. Let this be a lesson to us all. I'm getting my gloves now in the next couple of days. Glad your OK Sean :thumbsup:
 
I never use gloves but my wife does
I have a friend whose arms look like hamburger very raw !

I cannot belive u had the calm to take a picture with one hand i would have been freeking out !
 
That could never happen to me... your inmune sistem has to be weak...?
I enjoy messing around whith bare hands in the tank, any time, all day.
 
As I was reading this from the beginning I kept wondering all the way to page 4 where is Joeychitwood when you need him.
Then I saw the famous cat in the hat :D

Glad to hear everything turned out ok.
I know I will be more careful when working around the tank from now on.

Uh oh; I'm in trouble then! I always have cuts on my hands. Hopefully there's no ich in my tank ;).
