Anti Siphon

So how does having anti siphon holes below water line in the return pipe inside the sump keep water from sipoining if it is below the water and the water in the sump keeps rising because of the siphon? Any links with animation available?

The siphon holes are supposed to be just below the water line in the display tank, so that if the power goes out, etc, the siphon is broken when the water level drops a bit.

You can always put a checkvalve that has no spring just a floating ball type. thats what I have on both my tanks and I have never had a problem. (Other then finding this type of checkvalve)

i think the reason for that would be if the power goes out the return line would pull the water from the display to the sump but if you have the hole just below the waterline it will stop sucking the water from the display but would instead suck air and does break the siphon.

I have my return line right next to my overflow and I drilled a siphon break hole ABOVE the waterline. The small stream of water just flows into the overflow on the inside of the tank. I found that if the hole is above the water line and flows into the tank, it creates bubbles when it breaks the surface. With the hole above the water, corraline doesn't ever build up on the hole and when power goes out, siphon stops immediately. I'm not sure why everyone thinks the hole should be slightly below the water line. It works much better and requires much less spare room in the sump. You do kind of need something to shoot the water stream into though, because it will create bubbles if it just shoots into the tank.
