Any Aquarium Camera Ideas

I've been a little bit of research on cameras that will take good aquarium pictures. I got some pretty good ideas from our last meeting, however, I thought why not ask everyone for there thoughts. What do you guys think?

While on pictures.. It would be awesome for club members to take pictures of there tanks and post them on the new website..thoughts please.

a digital slr, for sure. point and shoot/auto focus is bad news for aquarium shooting. in my opinion at least. and i don't have an slr but will next year, hopefully.

Digital is a learning experience for me as you can tell by the photos that I have shot and posted here. (Just see my(blurry)Shrimp Goby Pictures on my thread below.) Which have all been shot with a very plain jane Kodak I am using of my wifes, and are of marginal to poor quality at best.

Digital SLR and a MACRO lens will be what I purchase.

The Macro with regular 35 was another dimension, and some of the Photography of Corals on RC with Diginal blows my mind(not hard) But too much hassle to transfer any 35mm to digital.(but I have been a hold out for a Looonnnggggg time. But I am now convinced.

I have enjoyed my Rebel XTi. There is a huge learning curve (and I've been cheating a little), but once you get some of the little issues taken care of, post processing can cover up a lot of inexperience. It's not a cheap venture, if you get it all at once, but think of a dslr (though I've seen some really good shots with PnS-you'll just never get anything like a macro), macro lens, and a tripod. I am still looking for a good tripod, but saw one at a friends with bubble levels on all legs and on the camera mount and was really sturdy (mine's a $100 pos). I'm using a 150mm f2.8 Sigma lens.

I had a Nikon DS70 and it was GREAT! After it was stolen, I went down a notch to save some money with the replacement. The only real loss in capability with the downgrade was the ability to control White Balance.

Aquarium lights, especially if you have any actinic, turn your pictures blue. You can fix it a little with software, but I think its never quite the same as when you can get the camera to get it right in the first place.

If I were buying another camera today, I'd get an SLR (so that I could add lenses for good macro in the future) that had good white balance controls.

I use a canon rebel XSi and am very pleased with that. I was using an Olympus E-510 and while it took great pictures as well I wanted a few more options that the XSi had.
I would STRONGLY suggest going to dpreview.com and checking out the reviews of each model there that you may be interested in. I don't think you will find a much better camera review site than that one. he puts every camera through the exact same tests and compares the results. often his reviews are 20+ pages.

I second that. Dpreview.com should be your starting point before spending all that hard earned money. I haven't seen anything better either.

Hey everybody. Thanks for all the great advice.. At this point its either the XSI, D80 or D90. All these cameras seem to have great features, but these price tags are a lot to grasp on to at first. I will definately have to start saving the pennys for this purchase. You guys definately put me in the right direction.
