Any disadvantages to buying maricultured?

So my LFS has a really nice mini colony of a blue/green acro (dont know the name); but its maricultured.

He says he only buys from two different people to make sure there are no pests in his system.

The coral looks very healthy, but I have heard that maricultured corals can be troublesome.

What do you guys think about maricultured?

Lets put it this way.. Ive had a MUCH higher success rate with Aquacultured stuff.

disadvantage: grown in the ocean and hardly any different from wild as far as hardyness. aquacultured overall are much hardier. if you buy cut a few small frags off it. those often make it when the colony does not.

I went through a similar situation, and even though I knew I should stay away, it was just a small frag and was beautiful. Gave it perfect parameters and it still did horribly. It's so hard to replicate the ocean, aquacultured stuff is popular for a reason. Just my 2 cents!

Aquacultured stuff is just wild/maricultured stuff that has lasted in captivity long enough to be fragged and perhaps fragged from those frags etc. For me they have been about 50/50, but that's counting a nasty bout with aefw. If the price is right i'd go for it but that's just me.

IME, I have 50/50 luck with each frag of SPS, it seems to me that the ones that die are Mari, even though I dont know (besides ORA) which ones are Aquacultured and which ones are Maricultured. It seems to me that if i have a slight swing in something, I lose a frag, but now I am down to all of my hardiest SPS and I am not having any problems anymore. I should ask for now on which corals are maricultured.

the best success I have had with corals are when I purchase them from other local reefers, only 1 in 3 corals that I get at different LFS's survive.

I agree with the others. Its best to buy aquacultured frags.

I think they are a little harder to keep than aquacultured. I really have no problem with them and look forward to purchasing a new wild or maricultured acro in the next month. If you keep your phosphate low, check with hanna, watch your ca, kh, mg and do proper water changes you will not have any problem with them. The hanna meter is really a must have.
