Any drawbacks to "instant-algae"?

I have a pair of tomato clowns and they are showing an increased amount of mating behavior. I know raising the fry is pretty labor intensive. Could using Instant-algae be a substitute for culturing your own green water? I am not sure if the rotifers would eat it because it is not a live algae culture. Raising the fry sounds like it could be a fun project.

All i use now is the instant algae, due to time constraints and the fact that my homegrown phyto cultures crashed all of a sudden. The only drawback that i can think of is when the bottle is close to empty you have to order more.:D

I only use Instant Algae. I've been using it for over 6 months now and I can't think of one drawback. You can't beat the convenience of it...it's always available and never crashes! I divide a bottle of it into smaller portions and freeze it. Reed states it can last up to 2 years frozen, but once you get your hatches going, it won't last long! (being optimistic for you!)

Barbara; I did not know that we can freeze it. I use the rotifer diet from reed is that the same as what you are using or do buy the larger bottles of their Nanno?

I use the Instant Algae "Nanno 3600" and it can be frozen. I've been buying the quart bottle which goes a long way. I would check with Reed Mariculture to see if the Rotifer Diet can be frozen...Reed has excellent customer service too when you have questions. Let me know what they say.

Nanno can be frozen because it has a tough cell wall. Other algaes like Isochrysis and Tetraselmis cannot be frozen, from what I've heard, because the cell walls will rupture and then they are goo.

What Andy said except Tet can be frozen :) http://reed-mariculture.com/microalgae/directions.asp

Phyto-Feast Rotifer Diet can be frozen as can Rotifer Diet HD (IA version). Phyto-Feast LIVeE and Phyto-Feast Premium can not be frozen though.

FWIW we culture billions of rotifers daily on instant Algae as do 500+ research facilities, hatcheries, Universities, etc. We sell to every single US based MO hatchery :D Just yesterday we shipped over a billion of IA grown rotifers to a hatchery in Norway.

Well Barbara i guess there is our answer straight from Reed, and yes they do have excellent customer service, i just received last week an order of rotifer diet and the bottle was somehow open during shipment. What a mess that made, but one phone call and it was replaced the next day.

Wow, damaged going over 17, that sucks since it's less then 20 miles from our office in Campbell :( Glad they sorted you out though.

I live in SC myself :)

Gresham; yeah that's what i thought somehow the top seal had fallen into the bottle and the pop-top was open inside it sure made a nice green mess of everything inside the box, but like i said you guys took care of it really quickly and i had my replacement the next day. I think at one time i talked with Randy and he recommended for me to use the Rotifer Diet (R) instead of the Nannochloropsis 3600 - 1 Quart Bottle.

I currently only have 2 5g rot tanks going for my clownfish larvae.
I hope to be able to make over for the event this weekend as well.

SC you say hmm. I would rather buy beer than pay for shipping hint hint lol.

I'd be willing to drop it off :) I live by the Harbor but I'd prefer not to meet at my house since my dog goes nuts with strangers

Well that's a cool offer for sure; I actually live down in Freedom, ever hear of Freedom Meat Lockers? It's my wife's family business, and i completely understand the dog thing as i have 2 of my own that do the exact same thing. I do have a bottle of rotifer diet on hand now but with a new hatch as well i will probably go through it pretty fast, what would be a good way to contact you? pm? Hope to maybe get a chance to chat with a the tas event this weekend as well.
