I would like to simply pump water from my basement up to my second level for water changes. any ideas of a simple solution that won't cost a fortune? I don't want to plumb any permanent pipes was thinking of a 100' hose I could run up to the second level each week to perform my water changes instead of carrying up pails of water! any thoughts?

Reeflo marlin....... It will handle that with no issue. Great reliability and tons of efficient power.....

thats entirely up to you all your doing is pumping water but 100 foot is a long distance i personally would use a iwaki 100 or similar as I dont like waiting forever but that would be up to you do you need internal or external mad 24 would be a start for internal. there is a calculator on the home page you can type in pumps and head pressures etc to see how much water the pump will push that would allow you to see exactly what would do how many gph thats a long distance so if you want more than a tricly its going to be a good pump

like I said hit the calculator up it will allow you to input and see exactly what your head is thats where you need to start but I will say this cheap isnt really a word I would describe the pumps I can think of that will go that far good luck

It's gonna take one hell of a pump to go through 100' of hose with two stories of vertical head. Just for water changes. Yikes.

What sort of volume are you moving and do you care about how fast it is?

When I have to do a 50 gallon water change I run a 75 ft garden hose up the basement stairs across the house to the tank. I use a mag pump. (Cant tell what size.) I tape the hose into the tank so I can do the whole process myself. I hook the hose up to the utility sink and pump enough water up to get a siphon going. I collect 10 buckets of "old water" dumping them down the sink. I attach the mag pump to the end of the hose and drop in the "new water" garbage can and start pumping up. Takes me about 40 minutes total. Way easier than the old walking upstairs with the buckets.

Show me a reasonbly priced pump that can even hit 30' of head. The few I can think of are all $450+.

The only way I can imagine to do this cheaply would be with the highest flow peristaltic pump you can find (maybe $50 on eBay) but then you're gonna have a long wait as even the fastest peristaltic pumps are only a few gph.

How fast does it need to be? Could the pump be slow and just pump the water into another holding vessel near the tank? You may want to look at peristaltic or diaphragm pumps. They can achieve pretty high pressures, but tend to be fairly slow.

now paul knows what I'm trying to do.... thanks paul! I have an extra mag pump I will try that! I just want to make the water changes easier! don't want to carry all the pails up two flight of stairs every week!

Yeah, they tend to be pretty darn slow. We used LMI diaphragm pumps when I worked at the water park. They were slow, but they could hit 30' of head easy. Some of them were rated to 100psi or something ridiculous. These pumps were close to $1k each though :hmm5:

I do know they sell ones that are more reasonable though.

I thank you guys for the input! I will check out those pumps your talking about to get a feel for the price! I also guess it wouldn't hurt if I try the mag pump and see if it will get the water up there and how long it takes. I also have a spare Pom pump rated for 20' or 30' maybe that would be better to try?

Yes, Mine is to first floor, but opposite ends of the house. The only way to know if it works is to try it. If you have a pump already try it. You might find out that you don't need as much hose as you think you do.
