Any issues with iPhone 5?

Well...

Take this for a piece of information. The two highest hardware failure/return rate devices we have are the 5 and 4s. They've been slipping. Bad.

I have lots of reasons I wouldn't recommend one: this adds to the fire.

At one point we were nearing a 2% out of box DOA rate on the 5. That's insane.

What would your rec on a phone be? My brother is a VP @AT&T, and he's been an iPhone homer for years but his personal phone is a Galaxy and he LOVES it! I'd say its in the running. Durability is our #1 priority for the time being.

I've had every iPhone since the 3GS and I can honestly say that the iPhone 5 is a piece of art. The LTE (true 4G) is insanely fast and the extra real estate on the screen is enjoyable when watching videos and surfing the web.

The new iOS Maps isn't perfect, but I wouldn't really know because I use Waze. If you have an iPhone and use GPS, it's 100% free and IME the best navigation platform on the market.

My only complaint is that the black iPhone 5 scratches super easy if unprotected (painted anodized aluminum on sides) but can be avoided by using a case or buying the white model.

I liked the droid OS but couldn't seem to get any durability or reliability beyond 6 months.
This has been my experience with every non-iPhone I've ever used. In the rare event that an iPhone has issues (2% failure rate on a product is a super low from a mfg. standpoint), the store will help repair/replace it.

What kind of durability Cully? The SG3 is a great phone, no doubt, but the sheer size itself can create some durability issues. More real-estate = more chance to break it. Having used both, but currently owning neither, the SG3 just feels too big in my hand. I'm always worried I'm going to drop it for lack of a good grip. The harder edges of the iphone feel more secure in my hand for some reason. I'm sure the fact I can wrap my hand around it helps too...

As for the booking of face, it baffles me how FB makes an app that's as slow at loading as it is, for either platform (doid/iOS)... You'd think they of all people would want you to have quick/easy access to their offerings to keep interest. I know it's only a few seconds, but the load time for it just seems slower than most other apps. I didn't notice bugs or problems with either phone when using FB, but I've only done so for a few hours total.

I don't think you can go wrong with either. Realistically, if this is for your wife, maybe see if she has some sort of emotional attachment to one or the other. I know my own wife tends to enjoy things she thinks she wants/likes better than other alternatives, even if they are better/superior. The emotional thing is big with chicks...

Johnny-

If 2% is acceptable, what do you manufacture? That's kind of scary. Really.

It's *not* super low from a large-scale manufacturing standpoint. It's about where factories were 100 years ago. Current RORs for durable goods are less than 1%. Anything higher than that and you should be out of business. Period. That's SCM/Manufacturing 101.

I'm starting a small business, and have hand-built prototypes (From a fab shop in Canada). Hand soldered. Hand joined. And have around a 1% failure rate. Automated/Mass production makes that far smaller.

Enterprise or commercial electronics is in the sub-1%. Acceptable is less than .5%.

Samsung aims for and delivers >.05% OOB-failure. Within a year, they trend sub .5% for failure rates due to manufacturer defect.

All I'll say on the topic is the largest phone manufacturer is Samsung, globally. With nearly 32% of the market. In the US, it's Samsung, with about 28% of the market. Apple is in second with around 14%; LG around 12%. Apple's volumetric return rates (not percentage) are nearly triple Sammy's for damaged and failed goods.

We sold nearly almost twice as many Samsung Galaxy S3s in '12 as we've sold all flavors of iPhones (4S and 5), and have about a third as many returned. Either for failure or dissatisfaction. To the point that if you have a warranty claim on one, we *don't have* refurbs to give as replacements; we have to give new stock. We have nearly a 7-month supply of 4Ss, and a 3-month supply of 5s (Think about that, versus how long they've been on the market.)

Off my soapbox, I'll put this in perspective. Pantech. The SeaClone of the Cell-Phone world fails nearly half as often as Apple products OOB. (~1%)

The biggest gripe I have with iPhone durability is glass for outward facing panes. It's beautiful, but insanely fragile compared to the competitors. Look at how many people you know with broken iPhone screens. Seriously. It's spawned an entire cottage industry it's so rampant.

If you buy something; how durable does it need to be? Shock proof? Waterproof? Or just scratch/abrasion/normal life resistant?

If it's gotta be *really* durable, go with a kevlar-cased Motorola. You *Can't* scratch it, unless it's a diamond abrasion tool. Or, at least look for Gorilla Glass; it's really tough to scratch/chip/crack.

My money? An SGS3 or a Razr HD Maxx. The Maxx is tougher (Kevlar); best radio on the market (I have empirical evidence, btw, not just an opinion); the SGS3 is a better toy. I carry whatever they let me test-mule, or whatever I ask for. Right now it's a Motorola test box; but I've used about everything out there.

On a lighter note, Johnny... I grew up in Catasauqua. Family is from (And many still reside in) Bethlehem. I fled the 'Valley in '86.... Still fly into ABE (Greater LV Int'l, now) quite a bit to visit; it's convenient for GA right off Race St.

Sorry for the rant; I really *don't* have a side. I see benefits to both platforms. I just think that recently Apple's been providing a poorer quality product wrapped in the marketing and pricepoint for a premium device. And it's showing in their market share.

Fletch nailed it. Take her in. Let her touch 'em. Whatever she likes; buy it.

Happy Wife=Happy Life.

My 2+ year old Samsung Captivate was still humming along until I decided to upgrade the OS a couple months back. Had I not upgraded it, I'm sure it would still be suiting my needs. However, it started to slow down, battery life was getting horrible, and it would freeze/crash occasionally.

I did my homework and I ended up getting an S3 on Black Friday for $50 ($150 off). It's a deal I couldn't pass up. So far, it looks like a rock solid phone. The 4G LTE is CRAZY fast.

Early this year, my wife got a new phone and was leaning towards the iPhone. When we went into the AT&T store to fondle phones, the sales guy actually talked her out of an iPhone to go with a HTC Droid.

I have a Samsung galaxy note and it is the best phone i have had the note 2 is a beast of a phone with the quad core processors

that there electronic note pad

I have been using my 32g 5 for a few weeks. I was very tempted to get the s3 while wAiting for my 5, but I just don't care for how large it is. Overall I love the phone. Screen brightness, and clarity is amazing. The touch screen feels more accurate, And responsive to me than othe phones. Lots of other things i like aswell. My one gripe is huge though. I go to get the new update for my i5, phone says sync up to computer for the update. Cant sync to iTunes cause its out of date. Go to update my iTunes and my iOS is out of date by 2 os. So now not sure if my Mac mini 2009 will handle updating to 2 new os. New computer just to sync my phone? I can still get all my apps and songs threw cloud. I get great lte coverage in buffalo out to Amherst. 3G in Lancaster. Lte is crazy fast. It make my home service cry.

I'm sorry but I just enjoy the IOS. I had the Mac mini since early 2009 and it runs flawlessly to this day. I mostly use my computer for pics, music, web surfing. Runs just as fast as ever. I can't say that about any of the countless other computers I have had after a year.

Except the milking customers dry thing I like apple products. Lol

I use mine on full brightness, so I charge every night. I would say similar to the 4s. I get a day worth, streaming 550, maps, games, music, web use. I use it all in a day. I would say I did not notice any drop in Batt. Life with the addition of the bigger screen. If anything maybe a lil better. Around 10 hrs of med use.

After using it a good amount today I'd say more like 12+hrs. Another thing I use more than I thought I would is Siri. She listens very well. It is also light weight, and feels great in my hands. No problems in the back pocket while I do my electrical work. I play music from my pocket while I work and can hear it pretty good.

The only complaint I have about this phone is that it doesn't work well at all. Activated at 12:30. Submersed in toilet by 19 month old son at 7:00 pm. Dead. What junk.

I hate my life.

put it in a sealed container of calcium cloride or rice asap, do not turn it on, leave it sit for 3 days

most likely the only thing that'll be wrong is the battery is shot
