Any pond people

The Grim Reefer

Ready for some NOBALL!!!
We are putting in a pond in and I am looking for information as far as the type of plants that will do good in this area.

Thanks

Thanks for the links. I would like to find some native stuff I could pretty much plant and leave in. Really don't want to try to winter the stuff.

Get a hold of AGGJSW over on SCMAS. He's a pond guy. Reefkoi has big one also.

I have a fairly decent sized pond with plants and a lot of stuff will live through the winter here. Hardy Water lilies do great as well as any of the cattails or reeds for the pond edge you can try creeping jennys. Water iris does wonderfull as well. Thats just a few to get ya started. As far as more troical stuff I keep a Taro and a Canna outside durign the summer than have an extra large flowerpot that sits by a window filled with water for during the winter.

Do you mean IN the pond or around the pond? I helped my mom with hers and she just used perennials she had kicking around. The hostas provide a nice leafy surrounding for areas you likely won't be stepping in and went well. Since then though, she switched the flowers up and moved the hostas elsewhere. For the areas she wanted to be able to get to, she did rocks with smaller perennials that did well in rocky areas. There was really no gameplan but everything worked really well. As for plants INSIDE the pond, she couldn't find anything you didn't have to winter. She did a waterfall (rocky creek thing) and basically just did whatever she had all around it.

Here is one image I could fine...

Probably doesn't help much... I was more the grunt in the project, just planting what she told me to plant.

Thanks for the info guys.

I am going to do in and around the pond.

As far as water lilies and stuff anyone know of a local source?

The tropical stuff is cool but I don't want to try wintering the stuff yet, maybe next year. Do you have to do anything special with the Lilies or the cats and reeds as far as winter goes or do they just come back in spring?

Thanks

The cats and reeds I leave in place the water lilys I just drop down so the don't freeze adn the irises I also leave in place.

careful grim you can't collect plants from public lands. I started looking so I could do a colorado plant tank and there are laws against collection at federal, state and local levels.

See what yo get for trying to be a responsible pond keeper :D

Yeah, I kinda figured that which is why I didn't just take a run up a creek somewhere.

private land is ok. i think it is odd we aren't encouraged to use local plants instead of importing a possible problem. Remember to dry out foreign clippings before you toss them.

Hey Grim, I put a pond in my back yard when we first moved in and it is loaded with water lilly plants. I also have a big Iris that was supposed to die in the winter, but continues to grow like crazy. I will cut you out as much as you want. My plants grow so fast that you can't see the water right now. I cut out the bulbs and roots every year. I have a mix of yellow and white flowers. So when your ready give me a buzz.

We have hardy lilies and pickerel rush and irises. I could split my lillies for you next spring they have white flowers.

Thanks. I kinda figured it is too late to add stuff this year, the pond should be done next week. I thought about throwing a few submerged plants in this year but would be all over some lilies if I wont kill them.

Thanks. That would be cool.

I can't believe I gotta learn how to tend flowers:rolleyes:

I keep threatening to stock it with channel cats to keep the sheen on my man card.

Jerry's pond

Jerry's pond

Hey Steve,

I haven't seen Jerry's pond in a year or so but, the last time I saw it, the pond was fantastic looking. By the way, just as you are the T-5 guru, check jerry's occupation. He is a expert in big water and water moving stuff. Oh yeah, he is also one hellofa nice guy.

So I have been pondified:D

I was wondering if any of you had falls on yours and if you keep them going in winter?

I want to try to winter fish in this thing and I am not really sure what should be done.

Thanks.

We have a fall going into a fast running creek that drains into the pond. We are going to keep it running this winter. To do so, we had to get a bit bigger pump just to ensure we were running enough water (via pressure) through the line.

No freezing issues, that's cool. We have about a 10' stream running into the pond with a 3700 GPH pump so hopefully we can do the same.
