Anybody eaten a mantis shrimp!?

There is a small commercial fishery in the Mediterranean based on Squilla mantis. You can buy them in many fish markets from Spain to Greece. I've had them several times in Venice and they are quite good.

Lysiosquillina maculata is fished and eaten throughout the Indo-Pacific and in some areas such as Tahitit has essentially been fished out. This is not my favorite stomatopod to eat.

From South China to Thailand Harpiosquilla harpax and other squillids are commonly eaten. A favorite is to grill females with ripe ovaries on a stick. They cook in their own fat and are quite good.

Japan has a small stomatopod fishery and even some aquaculture where squillids are reared to production size (but they can't rear the early larvae). One common way to eat them is as sushi (Shako). Another delicacy is to hold the stomatopod until it molts and then eat it whole - basically like soft shelled crab.

In Indonesia, I've been served a platter of large Odontodactylus scyllarus. There were 8-10, five inch peacocks on the plate - very attractive and quite good.

The strangest human consumption of stomatopod that I know of involves eating just the muscle in the merus of the raptorial appendage. I had a friend who was being wined and dined in Japan and was fed second maxilliped meral abductor by an attentive Geisha who extracted the morsels with a pin. I have had a similar feast in Trieste, but I had to shell them myself.

Scandal!

just kidding. hopefully people won't be too critical of Dr. Roy's dining habits.

I have a friend who went to Japan and really liked the mantis sushi. when he came back, he would always suggest that I should bbq my P. ciliata. No way! I wouldn't have the heart to eat an animal that I've kept as a pet, though I would like to at least try a mantis dish.

Iv'e tried mantis sushi before and it was pretty good.. It's called Shako or the style roll w/ mantis prawn. I still like the Tobiko a lil better..for all the sushi heads out there. With sake of course!!!
