anybody use the canon s5is?

And just a few more with the macro lens:

Now here are some shots I took without the Macro lens....all in Manual mode...for some I used normal settings, for some I used the built-in Macro or Supermacro modes.

I am having a hard time getting Reds to turn out. All the pics come out brown. I have tried playing with the white balance but can't seem to get it right. Any suggestions?

I would think that it has to be a white balance problem.....what method are you using to set the white balance?

What I do is switch to manual mode, set the ISO that I'm going to shoot with, as well as my expected shutter speed and F-stop. Then I zoom in on the whitest substrate I can find...focus as well as I can, and use the manual white balance to set it.

If there is not substrate that is really white, another option I have used is to drop a white lid from a container of carbon or something into the tank and point my camera at that to set the white balance.

Nice shots Jim, you've got me convinced that I made a good purchase. I'll post up some test shots asap. One question - In your last picture of the last post on the SECOND page of this thread, there are a bunch of yellow "squirt" like organisms... What exactly are those? I've got a few on some of my rock and I never bothered asking anyone.

Also, what custom settings do you use for full tank shots? I tend to end up with pictures that are too bright.

Cheers.

Well it seems after a little research that I answered my own question about the sea squirts, but my question about the full tank shot still stands ;)

For full tank shots I generally turn off the lights in the room to avoid reflection of the glass. I then use Manual mode and use a medium range shutter speed and F-stop...if the picture is too bright you should be able to go to the lowest F-stop to let less light into the picture.

those pics look great!
i love your tank too.

i just got back from gatlinburg and went to the ripleys aquarium - couldnt really pull out the macro lens cause too many little kids and pushy people, but ill post some pics here in a min.

now, i know they arent the greatest, but not much time with all the people there (it was packed) to play with the settings and whatnot, but here are a couple good ones!

Wow! Some really nice shots.

I have the same camera. Standard lens.

But I need some help. Focus help.

If I’m taking a pic of something that is close to the glass, I can get good pics in super macro, macro and normal. But once the subject is say 7 inches away, and I zoom in close, when I half press the shutter button I do not have focus.

Is it some setting I have not adjusted right? I can’t seem to get good shots at higher zoom when at a distance.

An example of a close in macro shot. No problem.

I get the same thing happening with auto focus. Sometimes I'm pointing at the subject, I have it in perfect focus, and as soon as I start pressing the button the auto focus activates and it goes all blurry. Does this mean I should be using manual focus? Because I've seen plenty of nice shots with auto focus on.

boudster. What say you?

Are you getting in focus pics on close up zoom on objects from the middle to the back of your tank?

mine will do that too. usually i will just go into manual focus when that occurs, and hopefully the fish or whatever stays long enough for me to manually focus on it.

ibanezgfx, with the macro lens you have, does it lessen the problem of losing focus on things you zoom up close on?

its a bit harder to focus actually. it really magnifies the subject and that means it has to be pretty still and u have to be pretty still because if you move back half an inch, it gets out of focus.

its pretty different than focusing in the macro mode and supermacro.
