anyone bargain down or try to get a deal at the LFS?

Ask and you shall receive! I spend a good amount of money in my LFS and they know it. I don't always ask for discounts but when I do they are very good at giving me some form of discount. It also doesn't hurt mentioning how I've seen the same thing at a different, newer LFS!

by you you have to. there is nothing cheap by you. thats why i go to tinely park or aurora. did a new store happen to open in downtown wheaton?if so how is it? both of the stores i go to will haggle and are always freindly.

i always bargain if possible, if buying more than one item or paying cash, it makes me feel like my business means something to them and it's worth cutting me a deal to keep me coming back

We've done this on a few pricy fish, such as Rhinopias, and have paid cash. The owner gave us 10% and no tax for cash money.

Sometimes, I say "I have X amount of cash, or you can use my debit/credit card at full price". As long as the cash price is fair, they will almost always go for the cash since they don't have to pay the bank their percentage.

I do not.

If the price is not fair, or not what I'm willing to pay, I won't buy it. Fish or anything else.

I view asking for a discount off a marked price as basically the same as asking the owner for money out of his pocket. He may do it, and I'm as happy as anyone else when I get a discount...but I won't ask for it.

EDIT: Full disclosure, I've been a customer, an employee and an owner. I've given many a discount over the years, but I won't ask for one.

I don't ask for discounts on stuff but I will ask them to honor their sale price if they don't have what I'm looking for at the time of the sale.

There was a LFS where I was a regular - they always gave me a discount without my asking. I had bought quite a bit from them...including a jellyfish  I'd forgotten about that jellyfish - what a catastrophe, almost ruined my marriage. Water can indeed flow uphill ;)

I never ask for a discount & never will. I don't consider my LFS a garage sale, used car dealer, or a flea market. Do you ask for a discount at the grocery store when you check out? I spend over $250 a week at my grocery store and don't get an extra discount. There's even been times that I've refused an extra discount on an item that was already a good price. The LFS I frequent already has the lowest prices around & in this economy they need every penny in order to survive. So if you think the price is to high than don't buy it or go somewhere else.

Th LFS that always gave me discounts does tons of business. The place is PACKED on the weekends. They are raking in the the dough. They drive Lexus's and last time I was there the owner had gone to Europe on vacation. They have a really good location and sell general pet supplies and birds also. I'll take the discount :)

Glad to hear their doing good & you live in a state that wasn't hit with this recession as bad as Michigan is. Consider yourself blessed!!

Yes, definitely a different situation. We do have plenty of LFS's that are struggling, but those guys are really good business people.

For "commodity" type purchases - just pick up those O-clowns at whichever store is cheapest or has the nicest specimens, because saving that last $3 while potentially ticking off the employees is sooo not worth it.

For the businesses that do a lot of high-end wysiwyg/internet sales, ime a little bit of flexible pricing is the norm. Always treat the vendor with respect and understand that they've got a business to keep afloat and they rarely get upset when asked for sane discounts.

What ...the used car dealer doesn't deserve full price? They're struggling too!

You don't want a discount, fine...other people want as much for their $ as possible.
I would guess that the amount of money you spend at that LFS (profit-wise) is a tiny, tiny fraction of their income. It would be better for them to give you a discount and have you send them more customers...VOLUME is the key to their survival.

Disclaimer...I am a Used Car Wholesaler

meh ...

I have a good relation with my LFS as I buy everything from him ...

I do bargin, but he beats me into it ... he gives me special prices, and always gives me as much discount as he can ...

but of course that's cause of our relation ... build through years, and my signing my pay chechs to him LOL hahaha jks

I've been dealing with the same LFS for 20+ years. Their prices are already discounted compared to what the other
dozen or so LFS in a 20 mile radius offer. Examples: coral beauty $18, TR B&W clowns $24, TR true percs $10, & etc.
I would rather they make the extra money and stay in business than haggle them out of business. We've already had
at least 2-3 stores go under that were higher end with the higher prices to match.

I haven't but I should. They want $7 for baby green Chromis but they know they are the only shop with healthy fish in town (at least that I have found).

my local lfs is a much smaller store. my dads known the owner over 20 years, and i buy the majority of my stuff there. his prices are already great, but he usually knocks down a bit of money regardless of what we buy...and anything small enough is usually free...

Not that I'm aware of. But I will look around. How is the Aurora Store. Been meaning to go there because I work in Naperville.

To me life is negotiation. I believe in supporting my LFS but i also believe in helping myself! I, unlike others, have more brains then money.
