Say if you are in Asia for vacation and there are alot of reef collecting locals around. You want to stock up your new tank. Is it possible to just buy straight from them then ship them back to US?

im pretty sure u can. but u will need to check about permits for importing live animals. i know u cant bring them on the plane.

I doubt you can buy them and ship them to yourself.

First of all there are legal and licensing obstacles to go through. Even if you got them to the states there's still customs inspections to go through. Once the packages are opened and inspected Who's going to repack them and forward them to you ? Even if you get by all those hurdles you're looking at several days before you get the package. By then all the livestock will probably be dead.

When they ship it to their retailers in the US do they ship it by sea or air?

You have to be licensed to import live animals. So, no, you can't just ship it to yourself.

Are they hard to get? I remember reading somewhere where people mentioned scuba diving and collecting stuff for themselves. I would imagine that if you want to stock up a large tank this way could potentially save you thousands of $$
