I've been looking into growing my own phyto cultures. I was wondering if anyone has grown their own before?

If you grow, I will buy. ;)
I quickly searched this forum and jake treesmoker had a thread in '07. Wow.

I have been thinking about trying to have a little more of the food chain in my tank. This should help close the gap between frozen mysis and the bottom of the food chain.

That's a MASSIVE gap to be filled with such a small item. your talking going from 3.000 or so millimeters, down to .002 (max) millimeters. It coral mouths, that is the entire range for the most part.

My buddy Jon from BAR does for his clown fry I believe. I'll have him get in touch if you want?

Thanks. I'm still in the doing a lot of reading phase but when I'm ready that would be cool to connect and throw done ideas around with him.

Doesn't products like Phyto feast, Roti-Feast, Oyster-Feast, et. al. fill the bill?

Not trying to argue the point just wondering. Seems like the convenience factor is really in favor of these type of products. Any downside other than the $$?

Yes those fit the bill but for me it's about the $$$. For the cost of 1 bottle of phyto feast I can buy all the stuff to start my culture.

It seems like it is pretty simple to do. I can see my self having way more then I need. Maybe if this goes well ill quit my day job and start growing rotifers. :)

Good luck with that! Wonder if Reed started that way. :)

I'm sure there are more profitable things you could grow in your garage! ;)

No, we started with growing Oysters in closed systems for zero wild vectors (clean seafood). Some other oyster farmers caught wind and asked for some of our phyto when they're culture went down. They told some other people and the next thing you know, the largest aquaculture show had to erect rope barriers for crowd control to our booth, no joke! Tim and Randy Reed went back home and ate 30K oysters, well, ok, they and a lot of other people did. And we migrated from Inland SeaFarm to Reed Mariculture. Now we have over 10 acres of greenhouses and over a million gallons in production... world leaders in marine phytoplankton concentrates and live marine zooplankton.

Sounds like a good place for a group meeting or tour :)

:( Afraid no one can visit Algae 51 (our farm). Even with signed NDA's, our contractors and guests only get what we call the white curtain tour which really is just a tour of our shipping department
