Anyone have Oregon Blue Tort

Title speaks for itself. Anyone local have the King of the Blue -- The Oregon Blue Tortuosa? Not just because I want a piece just slightly less than I want to remain breathing (ok, well maybe not quite that much :) ), but also because it would cool to see how this slow growing, beautiful piece develops over time, where you have it with regard to light and flow, what you are using for light, and any other experiences you might have with the coral.

This one is about five years old starting from a 3/4 inch frag. It's about five inches in width:

Here it is in July of 2010: (look about 1/4 across from the left margin above the purple stylo)

WOW, that is a slow grower, but absolutely beautiful when it gets bigger. Great job. Just talked with vividaquariums, their oregon tort won't be ready for fragging for at least another year. For some reason people are reluctant to frag and trade in their slow growing, rare, super-blue stony corals. Weird right?

However, now that Tom has thrown the gauntlet, it's time for Brandon to post pictures of his!

I've never fragged it It took a long time to get going. Started with 2 frags ,one didn't make it but that was back when my tanks were less stable than they have been for the last 4 years. Now it's growing a bit faster. Seems to like organic carbon dosing. Get's very full polyp extension at night. Definitely a favorite. I don't know if Brandon has one. He does have a nice california tort and I have a frag/mni colony of that.

Yeah, his Cali tort is sweet. I picked up a piece of it at the frag swap. The bad news was, I think something fell in it in transit because a piece of the purple outside is worn away and the green interior is showing. The good news is, it's regrowing it's purple skeleton even as it sits in quarantine.

And thanks for the info on the Oregon Tort! If you don't mind my asking, where did you get your frags from?

I don't recall. Maybe Foster and Smith or one ofthe lfs's in Buffalo. I haven't seen it around much but haven't been looking for it.. It was a long time ago. BTW,fyi it has been relatively high under 14K Hamilton SE bulbs with vho super actinic supplementation for most of it's stay in my aquarium. Went to xm 15 k about 6 mos ago and it does fine with the change.

Ive seen Buffalo have a Oregon tort for sale few months back might be worth giving them a call and see if they can get it for you. Live aquaria/Divers Den Ive never really seen with it when i browse the sps.

Haven't seen it in a long time but DFS had it along with other ora stuff years back,IIRC.

yea guys sorry i missed this thread , yea i have the cali tort. and i also have a small miyagi tort as well. no oregon tort, sorry about that! my cali tort has gotten huge over the past few years, i think the lineage was back to mark klier from Rochester that fragged his and traded or sold a few pieces to ABC reefs in cuse when it first opened.

i dont have any current pics of the colony. i have dropped the ball with my pictures lately. ill have to get some taken soon

Hi Gary,

The blue one might be; as you know id is always guesswork, for me anyway.

Here's the text from the Corals of the World source linked earlier regarding Acropora tortuosa:

Characters: Colonies consist of prostrate, tapered branches which have many branchlets and incipient axial corallites. Corallites are immersed to long and tubular, giving branches a rough, irregular appearance. Tentacles are not extended during the day.
Colour: Deep blue (which may photograph mauve) or brown.
Habitat: Lagoons.
Abundance: Common at Elizabeth and Middleton Reefs of south-east Australia, rare elsewhere.

Mine definitely do not put out polyps during the day; and do at night. Osberving that characteristic might help you get closer to an id .

Hey Brandon, How long have you had the miyagi tort? I got a nice 1.5 inch frag from Copps a few months ago. It's doing well. Interested in any observations you have on it's growth coloration and care.

Mine is also from coops...slow grower but I made it mad with an all spike but since it rebounded nicely. I have mine in high flow and light. Almost highest in tank. The colors range with a dusting of iridescent green and base color of darker blue. With some pale blue area. Decent polyp extension all timimes of the day and night
