Very green to salt water tanks. I just paid my membership dues to BAR, I was wondering if anyone here is also into planted tanks. I would like to trade some of my plants for some coral. I have some really rare and uncommon plants. Thanks goes out to fishnfst in getting me to the "dark" side lol. Thanks to Robin as well for hooking me up with some live rock and sand.
Here is a pic of my planted tank, maybe it will get some trades started.

beautiful tank, i used to be pretty into planted discus tanks too.. until my reefing took over; its alot of things to learn, even if you are well versed in freshwater..

Thanks, I realize I know nothing about reef thanks. hahaha. If anyone is crazy enough here to be doing both and want to trade let me know.

is that tennelius (sp?) grass?

That plant is Blyxa japonica. It gets really big in this tank.

that really is gorgeous. wow.

:eek2:

Thanks, no offers? I have some plants in here that are really rare. Rare crypt on the right is in the 75+ dollar range per plant. Probably less than a handful of people growing it in the US. Besides the people I have given it to.

Wow... well, I know nothing about planted tanks, but that looks amazing :)

What kind of corals are you looking for?

We should get you to post some newbie guides to planted tanks :)

Thanks, I'm looking for anything right now esp. bright stuff. I just have a 8-9 gallon tank setup. I just have some zoas and mushrooms right now. If anyone has any questions about planted tanks, I could do my best to answer them.

hehe.. fishnfst, thats what i said to my friend who got me into planted tanks. i just got him into reef tanks earlier this year and said the same thing to him.. i still got an 18 gallon planted tank with a breeding pair of discus, but that all kinda went to the wayside with my reef tank now..

ianiwane, i got some beginner corals for you if you ever come to the east bay. sounds like you are looking for mainly softies right now? local folks i met were really nice and generous with me when i started, so just trying to pay it forward.

also, check out the bareefers.org site if you get a chance, the frag swaps, etc. are a great way to meet other folks and support locally propogated corals..

What species of crypt is that? I love crypts. The only ones I have growing right now are some balansae in the work tank. That's a really nice tank that would be perfect for an Amano book. Too bad I only have time for my reeftank these days. I miss the days of dealing with CO2 diffusers and laeterite...

Here's a pic of my old 29-gallon with a thicket of wendtii in foreground:

and my Planttank.com site I haven't updated in over 4 years.

It's funny, a few months ago, I thought of converting my 150 into a freshwater planted tank, but I just don't have the time for it right now.

Thanks sounds like a plan. I am getting some stuff from another person I helped with plant clippings a while back. I'll be getting it on sunday. I'll see what he has and get back to you.

The crypt on the right looks like this when in the right conditions. I took this pic a month back.

It is Cryptocoryne cordata "rosanervig.

I do think I will eventually convert one of the planted tanks I have to reef. Its just a matter of time.

Ok, here's a couple questions...

What do you recommend for a non equipment intensive nano planted setup for a newbie?

Is there such a thing?

thanks!

So for example for a 10 gallon tank:
lighting either 28w coralife PC or 40w custom USA PC
Substrate ADA aquasoil (6L) from aquaforest (no need for power sand for such a small tank)
I would do DIY CO2 (if you have the equipment you could do pressurized)
Ferts including Micros (regular flourish), macros (potassium nitrate, potassium sulfate, potassium phosphate)

This setup could probably grow just about anything.

If you are looking to grow mainly mosses, ferns, and anubias. You could do without the CO2 and ferts. In this case I would stick with the 28w light not the 40w light.

Hope it helps

Good advice. I would suggest Bolbitis heudelotii or African water fern, anubias and cryptocoryne. All are low light species and grow relatively slowly so you won't be pruning all the time. You might want to spot substrate fertilize the anubias and cryptocorynes. I used a product called Terrapur which were cone shaped fertilizer pellets.

ianiwane: Your planted tank is absolutely gorgeous!!!! I've always wanted a planted tank but don't know much about it. Yours look like the ones I've seen in Japanese magazines, just absolutely stunning. Thanks for sharing a pic.
