anyone know of a tiny chiller?

The temperature in my den has been rising during the past week or so with rising temps outside. And it is not even hot outside yet. My tank is getting to 82 F with the top open and a fan blowing on it. It is a 9 gallon tank and the evaporation with the fan on is one half gallon per day. That is 5% of tank volume resulting in a BIG salinity change everyday. I think the answer is a tiny chiller. But it will have to be inside the tank as I have no outside tank filtration. Anyone have any ideas?

I don't remember the name, but there are chillers you can install as a "bulkhead" in a hole in your glass. Try the search function if you can get it to work, or ask in the equipment forum. The chillers I'm thinking of are designed for smaller systems. Hope you can find them.

A little side note that might help-- a simple auto-topoff made with a gallon jug, some airline tubing and a small valve would take care of the salinity change, but you would obviously have to keep using the fan.

The Ice Probe, yes. Looks like magic, but actually works: Peltier Effect chillers work in car ice boxes, computers, etc. I wish they made one size larger. It would be possible to DIY this, and you can get components, but that one should be just your size.

ok, it says I need to drill a hole in the glass?? I dont know how to do that. Would I have to take everything out of the tank? hhmm.....

If you get a HOB filter on your small tank (I know you said you don't have any filter), you can install the tiny chiller on the filter by drilling the plastic side panel of the filter. Drilling a small tank can be tricky since the glass pane is usually pretty thin and easy to break. You can also stick a small skimmer into the filter if you don't want to clutter up your tiny tank with it.

The filter that is in my tank looks like a powerhead that sticks down in to the tank and it sends the water into a long tube with holes in it that sprinkles the water over a rectangular blue filter. Then the water falls onto some black balls, and then falls into the tank. This filter sits directly behind the light, and they fit together tightly to form a solid cover over the tank.
I'm not sure exactly what a HOB filter is.

A hang on the back filter like an AquaClear power filter.

A number of nano reef people use AquaClear or other hang on the tank power filters without a filter media to stick a tiny skimmer in or to install an Ice Probe chiller. I recommend that you do a search on nano-reef.com or the nano reef section of RC forum to get some detail information.

Ive checked the web site of the makers of the Ice Probe and cant find its dimentions anywhere. I need to know how long the probe part is. I have to find an old waterfall filter I can drill out to fit it into, but dont know how deep it needs to be.
