Anyone out there growing Seagrasses?

Alrighty Y'all, I'm coming up on the tank teardown/move/setup/nightmare day this coming Saturday. That means the 180gal is preparing for take off. Just need to get sand and then hopefully next week Im gonna order some seagrass. Can't wait to update.

OK.

Why the shallow water? For the mangroves? Stand alone or connected to another tank? It looks like you're doing a patch reef with seagrass, mangroves and macro algae. Sounds cool! Sounds like your plan is coming together. Can't wait to see it come alive!

Yes Mangroves mostly the reason for the shallow waters. Need to find room for this guy.

It is going to be connected to the 450gal reef I'm tearing down.

Also it is going to be exactly a patch reef with macros, seagrasses, mangroves, corals, and a few fish. I need to start taking to Sam about where he found all his different mangroves, looks like a cool project he's been doing for the last year. So I've been inspired by both you and him and try to combine the two ideas into one tank.

Wow, that sounds awesome, and huge! Beautiful mangrove too. Given its size, I don't see why (and where) you'd want more.

Good luck with the move!

Sorry Sam i didn't have a real reason to post a picture of the mangrove yet. That was taken shortly after i removed it from my old tank. It is a little sad looking right now, but should bounce back after its placed in the climate controlled tank. And Michael, the mangrove is roughly 6yo. I bought it when it was 4yo from a friend who started it, and I have had it about two years.

Mangroves tend to not like being moved and often drop their leaves. This is one of the reasons I grow my trees in pots. I am very apprehensive about the eventual move I will have to do with my tank and trees nonetheless.

Is anyone out there growing Manatee Grass? Surely, I'm not the only one. If you are, please post. I'd love to hear from someone else who has taken on these plants!

So the tank move was mostly a success. Im still in recovery from moving this guy and making sure all the livestock is happy. Here is a shot of the 450 with the 180 on the side for the Mangrove and seagrasses. I think the stand for the 180 came out pretty close to the original wood of the tank. Hopefully I will have it all plumbed and flowing by the end of the week. The top pillar on the left side of the reef tank is where the surge device will go.

Im going to start a new thread on the 180gal progress when I get it up and going.

Yep, you're ready to start a thread!

Sounds like you've got your work cut out for you. Looks to be a pretty cool setup! What are the dimensions of the 450?

my halophile engelmannii(star seagrass) seems to be doubling leaf clusters quickly. At first it only had six clusters with one bud, now there seems to be ten full leaf clusters. Has anybody worked with star grass with the same results?

my turtlegrass just starting shooting up babies, if anyone is interested in trading, send me a pm, im looking for other seagrasses, thanks

I might tear down the 90, as it it missing lots of key components (and it's kind of small), and replace it with a 127 (72" x 24" x 17") and a 40B planted (f/w). I have a couple of small blades of seagrass, but my sand bed isn't nearly deep or nutritious enough for them, but somehow they pull through. You were saying about critters to keep with seagrass? Small snails (cerith, littorid, nassarius, etc), mollies, feather worms & brittle stars seem to work great. Snails get the algae off of the blades and all sorts of other places, mollies are cool as it is, but they will chomp on diatoms and algae, brittle stars get the detritus and fish poo, and feather worms consume organic particles from the water column. My tank is currently overrun with Caulerpa lentillifera and tiny brittle stars... :| Sponges seem to help a bit too, but can be quite finicky. Are you allowed to give away things for free on here?

Thanks, Genera! Which one is lentillifera? Pic? I'm overrun with racemosa var peltata.

Additional critters worth adding: spaghetti worms are great detrivores. Getting an assortment of pods is helpful. Besides cerith snails, the only other snail I know, that reproduces in aquariums is a tiny strombus snail, a conch relative, and excellent algae eater. Both these snails clean my seagrasses, end to end, and they keep the macros clean as well.

Are you keeping sponges?

I'm turning the old 55 corner into a turtlegrass/eelgrass seahorse corral -- hopefully with some "safe" corals as well. Any of you guys using LEDs to get your 55-60 K needed? I'm thinking of AIs or Radions...
Looking for some more specific info on lighting a salt plant tank.

That sounds very cool, rppvt! Seahorses are natural residents of seagrasses. A great combination!

As for lighting, go bright. The grasses grow in pretty shallow water. Oh, and the turtle grass needs a deep sand bed.

Welcome!

My 70 tall seagrass

My 70 tall seagrass

I setup a seagrass tank in 2004 in a 70 tall tank 36 x 15 x 31+. I wanted a turtle grass tank but also added manatee and shoal grass. The tank had a 7 inch sand bed with mineral mud and an Outer Orbit 150mh and 2 x 96 watt PC fixture so just under 5 watts per gallon.

Things went relatively well but after a year the seagrass died back. The manatee grass flowered in my tank and seems to do the best of the three. Later I added shoal grass and paddle grass to a 37 tall macro tank and they made for a good foreground.
