So I was wondering if anyone out there uses Dolomite or even vermiculite in their calcium reactors to maintain their Magnesium? I am wondering where I can get my hands on this stuff. I'd prefer not to pay 10X the amount necessary and buy the zeomag media.
Local guy here has a seperate reactor for that that is a closed system . He's bombed the PH with some kinda of Freshwater buffer and has it on a timer to drip each day into his system, Total dripping time i think he said was 30 minutes a day. keeps his tank 1385 MG..
I just dose Kent's Mag twice a week.... happy with that .
I use the Schuran type media, so I keep the effluent pH at 6.2. Is this low enought to disolve the dolomite? If so, I think that this is the way to go for me to maintain my Mg. My current level is only 1080 .

I hope so. I used to have a staghorn that encrusted all on the back of my tank. That is the sure sign that your tank is jammin when your SPS grow on the glass like xenia!
It makes me mad that I have had so much trouble getting my tank to be as sucessful as the ones that I have had in the past. I really thought that a 400 gallon would be more stable. I wish I had the 180 back *not*!
I'm going to get it up first with some Magflake and then maintain it with Dolomite. Dolomite, the original pimp!

Menard, where do you get your Dolomite from? I gotta get my tail up to see you!!!!!:mad2:
Now I know why it hasn't kicked in yet, will lower the Ph down a bit more. The dolomite came from this quarry, dirt cheap, but I don't think they ship. I filled a 5 gallon bucket up....$2. http://www.foxriverstone.com/crushedstone.htm
You should be able to get bag's of it at a local garden supply shop. I use Fauna marin's dolomite, it's supposed to be more pure. Visibly it is pure white, unlike the dolomite available outside the hobby. Yeah it's more money, but for the ammount you have to use it's not that bad at all.
