Anyone Thinking of Dumping LEDS and going back to Halides

I should have mentioned, just for full disclosure, that I had 4 led units over the tank which is 84" long. Enough per the manufacturer's recommendations, but I knew full well I really needed 1-2 more units. This would have giving me better spread and probably would have made it look a little brighter.

Probably???

Well that whole statement says "manuf don't know jack about LED"

no more no less.. ;)

If you had tried to achieve the brightness of the MH/T5 setup with your LED setup, you would fry your corals. That is what I experienced with going from T5 only, to LED only. I am now with T5 ATI/Gieseman bulbs and LED 453nm actinics for the pop. It has the same 10k look I pointed out in JB NY's post.

Depends on how you go about doing it. I got my Hydra52 at 96% of total output during my 4 hour peak. It is not dim by any stretch. I am shooting for 100% down the road.

Dennis, I think your tank looked equally super nice under both lighting systems, a bit different maybe.

+1 the led's i'm assuming don't give justice to camera's unfortunately. What happened to the zoa's on the last photo (most recent) they seem now gone?

I always retouch my photos to best capture what I see in real life.
And I always ran my LEDs pretty crisp white with just a hint of blue, very close to my MH in color temp.
So what you see is pretty accurate.
With both lighting systems taking pics is really tough. I don't think its any easier with the MH/T5 setup. And both lose a little of that sumfin sumfin in pics. ;)

Most zoas were removed. I don't care for the way they spread and take over the rock.

switched from MH to LED

switched from MH to LED

just a few months of growth pic's this tank was only recently setup this year, I know its crappy and nothing compared to what you guys got growing for sure, just wanted to contribute. I know this is a MH thread which I used to run years ago and recently for a short period of time. I started a new system a few months ago and started with 250 HQI MH setup but may have not given it enough time and ended up switched to LED's. Needless to say the corals took off once I dialed in the LED's and nutrients, it wasn't the lights as much as it was the operator imho since they are just to powerful for my system and the tank needed some age. Mind you the corals are only seeing 150-200 par at the most since its a BB UNLS. With this said I do want to try MH's in the future again on this system just to see a difference. One thing that has always puzzles me is seeing all the guys running crazy par values on there sps/acro's. If you can get your corals to except that amount of light then they are surely growing like weeds lol.

On a side note we have a local retailer who has a hell of a purple thumb with a 500+ gallon system running MH, T5 and LED's. His goal was to offer multiple options for his customers. Well from both his and my own thoughts, they grow the same speed, yes corals and growth patterns are different. Whats really interesting is not all the corals like the same lighting so he put them under what grows them or keeps them living the best. Acro's are easier under the MH's hands down. I will admit the first viewing when i walk into the store is to walk right to the led's section then over to the T5 and MH since its so much more sharper looking / pop factory etc...

Great thread and this subject will be one that is worse then BB verse sand bed subject ;)

I've always been pretty lucky with LED and had better growth and colour than I ever did under MH or T5

Offhand comments like that drive me insane . . . if you've had success back it up with some evidence. Sadly your saying you've always been "pretty lucky" is like that American commercial where the woman says "here's my boyfirend; he's a French model" and the obviously non-French model smiles and says "Bon - jure". The point being the internet is full of liars and trolls.

Show us proof.

After you bad mouthing my corals I went out and bought some MH lights.

I will say that the photos of reef blokes tank are amazing.......http:// http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1852268&page=24
One of the few led tanks I really took serious. One of the main reasons I stuck with led and tried the hydra 52, unfortunately it did not work out so well for me as I have recently put up radiums and using my 52's as very expensive actinic lighting . Here is day zero under halide. all of this was grown in a 180 under led, and broke down and crammed into this 80 gallon

There is plenty of proof out there that LEDs work, and work well. It's funny that the majority of people using LEDs will quite readily say that MH/T5 fixtures work well. However there is plenty of LED bashing from MH/T5 owners who dumped LEDs blaming the fixtures themselves and not the setup that they had in place.
LEDs are far far far more customisable than MH/T5s, for this reason it is possible to create lighting spectrums that would never be seen in nature and for this reason coral growth and colour does not live up to expectations, especially when you add up the cost of an LED system.
When used properly however it is possible to achieve fantastic growth and colour from LEDs.....and there is plenty of proof of that out there.

Bonjour to you too Sir lol

I didn't post images of my aquarium as didn't want to inflame the thread with spam posting images of my own aquarium, the tank was lit with AI lighting. Its recently had a reboot due to a replacement glass tank but I'll continue to use LED.

Regards

No No No Reefbloke, you've obviously put all those corals in the tank at that size......and you adjusted the colours on your camera/photoshop........or you switched to LEDs the day before and all that growth and colour is down to MH/T5s. Am I missing any other reasons LED bashers give when shown proof of an amazing LED lit tank?? And it is an amazing LED lit tank by the way, great work mate!

No matter how you got the tank that way, its very nice. Hope you continue to have success.

Thankyou:)

Nice looking tank, ReefBloke, i like those tank dimensions... what are they?

What's your lighting setup?

Hi , At that point there were 4 x Hydra 52 over the aquarium , the aquarium is German so metric sizes but it roughly translates to 6 foot x 33.5" wide x 27" tall.
The whole system is around 370 US gallons or 1400L.

I now run 6 x units for my main lighting and 2 x Vega just to brighten up shadows due to a new brace bar layout. since the reboot however and have turned the power down to suit, this helps prevent shading as the colonies grow out.

Pictures of the new layout using Marco rock although the tank is very young now its rebooted, also a picture of one of my frags (before and after grown under LED's) It did take around 2 years of growth but i fragged it down during this time but the last picture is of the coral this week.

Also a video of my tank back in last April before the break down.

Beautiful reef tank Reef bloke, glad to see your success with led.

Thankyou
