Anyone Thinking of Dumping LEDS and going back to Halides

So to be clear, since you have never used anything but LED, you are not thinking about dumping LED's and going back to MH? You have never used anything but LED, and because it is you, it is clearly the only lighting technology worth using. Anyone who isn't you, and doesn't use what you use are clearly fools. Is that what you are saying?

"I just laugh at people" who have only used one tech and sneer at people who have years and years of experience with just about every lighting tech that has come along. You have been in the hobby for only 3.5 years and you have decreed that anyone who doesn't use LED's is living in the past? Really? Who has the closed mind? Where would this hobby be if it weren't for MH, T5, PC's and the absolutely oldest tech ever...the Sun.

Posts like yours do nothing to further the education of people who are looking for the best solution for their tanks, it only causes confusion, and sadly the confusion is yours. This may seem blasphemous to you but sometimes it isn't LED, which is what this thread is all about.

Jack,

Please don't use logic or reasoning in this thread. It really messes up others arguments!

Thanks
Ryan

Lol...get the popcorn ready!

A little humor should never hurt. :D

This thread still has a lot of potential to help people, if we can keep the non-sense out of it. There are pro's and con's to every light or any other piece of equipment we can use.

lol, I "think" you know what I mean Jack. They are working and working very well for me. I would recommend them to anyone.
Get the lights and water dialed in, and you are good to go...........

I take very little from anyone that has run them for less than a year.

I also question anyone that thinks the picture posted a few posts ago can compare with Krzysztof's(spelling?) tank. They aren't even comparable.

Till now I had 2 different LED fixtures and for my new tank I decided to go back to MH+T5 combo.
Giesemann Infiniti is my choice.

All I can say about LEDs is that they are great option when thinking about power savings, but the overall experience for the viewer can't be compared with T5 or MH.

Although I have to admit I'm a bit worried about potential heat issues, I decided to give myself that pleasure of viewing all that colors that I've missed for several years.

But if I had more money, I'd probably go with ATI hybrid ;)

what leds did you use?

Eco lamps KR90 and Maxspect Mazarra.

Both were great in build quality and performance, but the viewing experience never fitted my eyes.

It's just personal thing, I'm not talking about growth :twitch:

Well, as I stated in the post above, it's a personal opinion and I'm not claiming that LEDs don't have any advantages over MH and T5. I just love a brighter look of my reef.

Someone in this thread mentioned that LEDs cause that "avatar effect" and I couldn't agree more with that statement. Everything looks a bit artificial under them, the light is focused, and even with 100 degrees optics you get more shadows than with T5s or MH.

To better understand me, I'm the guy who's open for new stuff and technologies, and I am keen on changing equipment as new products arrive. So I gave a chance to LEDs, 2 times, and it seems they just can't give me that look I'm searching for.

If I was the only one thinking like that, then this thread wouldn't exist.
There are many beautiful tanks using LEDs only, but as i sad, LED + T5 combo is probably the best thing out there.

I think I understand where you are coming from. I'm not sure I like all the extra pop I see on some of the pictures posted here. My personal preference is something closer to a 10K look. I liked the look of the old Iwasaki bulbs with Actinic supplements and am hoping to get there without the heat of Metal halides in my situation.

But I forgot to mention something that bothers me the most about LED fixtures out there... :fun2:
Well, I know that aluminium (for heatsinks) is quite expensive, but why all LED chips must be placed in such small clusters?!? That's the biggest reason for shadows. If one would spread chips wider, the light would be more T5 look alike.

Acro(no idea name) started from about 1.5" frag

No offense but those aren't metal halide or t5 colors. That's exactly what my sps looked like under leds to and that is exactly the reason why so many led users have switched back to halides and the reason halide users haven't switched to led, I'm sure most of us halide/t5 users will stick with our halides/t5s until something is proven better

I love my T5s, and I think the tank does too:

Awesome tank!

Here's a really good youtube video of a guy showing the PAR readings of the reefbreeder fixture. Check out the power Jack!
