Anyone Thinking of Dumping LEDS and going back to Halides

Jack,
Heck yea it is!!!!! You dont have all those booster stations between you and the dam. Electricity dies out as it travels down the lines. I would imagine each city or counties has their own booster stations. Not sure how it works exactly, but yours truly is paying for it.
I have my whole house 2500 sq. ft., built in pool, 65 gallon SPS tank. One wife, one daughter two computers, two TV's. My bill is usually around 79.00 a month! Summer months with full central AC, maybe 150.00 a month for 2 months if the heat is excessive.
I have led's in my kitchen that I installed. I went from 625 watts down to 90 watts! Helped out tremendously!

^^^^I am in So Cal the IE and my cheapest elec bill is 200 in a 1300 sq ft house, tier 4 here 120 tank w/ 6 bulb T-5 and the bill is only going up.

Did any of you think about dumping your metal halides for leds and did it. Then went to led's, then dumped them, and went back to metal halides? But now, your thinking about doing leds again?? You my friend are jacked up!!!!!!! LOL!!!!!! I KNOW SOME OF YOU ARE DOING THIS RIGHT NOW...............................LOL
Man, that can get veryyyyyyyyy expensive!!!!! LOL

I dumped halides went to leds then dumped leds and went back to halide then recently dumped halides and went back to leds haha!

LOL!!!!!1 Well DSPs, you helping to keep our economy going thats for sure!!!!
but did you hear about the NEW METAL HALIDE/ LED COMBO LIGHT???
ITS A METAL HALIDE BULB WITH LEDS INSIDE THE METAL HALIDE BULB!!!! So you get both types of lighting in one bulb!
So when your brain wants to go back to metal halide...........YOU GOT IT!!
Then when you want to go back to LEDs.............................. YOU GOT IT!!!
So your tricking your brain into not spending anymore money!!! Because you got both already. So then just throw some T5's in there for good measure. Then you cannot blame the lighting anymore......................LOL

Was thinking of going back to LEDs, this after I dumped halides and went to LEDs, only to dump LEDs and go back to halides.

When I think of going back to LEDs.....I realize that the amount I save on electric will be negligible, I will probably never recoup the costs of switching again, heat is easily manageable with some thought and even welcome in some cases, and these darn Radiums just work so well. The silly little things like sunrise and sunset I remember have no effect at all on coral in my tank, and only serve to have more to play with on a tank.

But what do I know :D

Jim,
The sunrise/sunset adds a while new dimension to your reef. Once your fish get used to it, they come out in the morning and feed, then in the evening the come out right before the lights go off completely and feed again. Like clock work!
Also, you get different looks throughout the day on your ref. Just like in the wild!!
It's really awesome and just adds a whole new dimension to your reef. You get the blue look you love, then the crispy white you love at high noon! Then back down into blue again.
I am certain this is better for my corals. And my tank.............cool cool cool.
Did you sell your reefbreeders value fixture?

My fish nor coral have never seemed to have any problem whatsoever with lighting, they are not the brightest animals ;)

Yeah, I ended up selling them. I found them a bit pink and dim...though I did not find my DIY LEDs dim(to my surprise). Maybe it was the room they were in, it gets all the sun. I've thought of giving them or even some high end LEDs a shot again...but there is just no incentive for me.

My DIY LED's just went out for some reason =/ had to put up a old 175 mh on the tank. Lets see how everything adjusts. I have had the LED's on there for 2 years now... everything should be cool right?

There ya go!!! I KEEP TRYING TO TELL THESE GUYS................IT CAN BE DONE!!!!! YOU can do it...........WITH LEDS!!!!!................................LOL

6x80w ATI Sunpower. Will cover the entire tank without issue and you will have one of the best lights on the market.

After much consideration, much to my surprise, this is what I went with. Just seems a good compromise. I know it will work, bulbs are not as expensive, no real heat and spill over issues to worry about, and the power draw is less.

Will just add some LEDs for moonlights and a little shimmer. Plus, couldn't pass up the 14% off promo at marinedepot.

JWClark
That is a good unit! And it will grow corals no problem at all. All three will grow corals, and grow them well.......

The surface of my led's is 80 degrees...........................LOL. But that with 40%blue and 30% whites. Pretty dam cool. Dont try this at home metal halide guys............YOU MAY HURT YOURSELVES!!!! LMOA!!!!!!!!!!!

I used to have halides in the fixture I built myself you see in my avatar.
Due to the venting fan design I used it added zero degrees to my water and it sat on the tank.
Now I have a 5' Illumina 260SR that is 3" above the surface and it adds 2 degrees at high noon.
IMHO the only advantage LEDs have over halides is lowered power consumption.
