Anyone Thinking of Dumping LEDS and going back to Halides

Perfect example . . .

LEDs grow corals, but not the same way . . .

You think you have put one ounce more work into your tank than I have mine ? Just because you run MH???? I can promise you, you have not. We all have to start somewhere dude. Don't knock on my frags I have some really nice looking acros now. Yeah they are frags/mini colonies sorry I don't go out buy huge colonies to start with, I like the gratification of growing them myself. Yea that's right they are under radions but that's what I prefer I have no fight in this discussion I don't disagree MH grow them better but I like the other benefits of LED and my corals ARE growing. I just wanted to play your little game cause I thought it'd be fun. You are a real piece of work. Out of your league ????? Please dude. You have different lights than me WHOOPTY DO!!!!!! that doesn't make you better at anything.

This thread is a place for hard core SPS nuts to explain why acropora grow better under MH or T5 than they do under LEDs. I have said time and again in this thread that this is a hobby and you should use the lighting you prefer. Your post was in response to my post asking for pictures of 6 month changes that I could not distinguish as LED. Your frags are distinctly LED grown. That doesn't make me better or you worse or anything of the sort. What it says is that you haven't shown any evidence to change the gist of this thread which is for the cagillionth time . . . YES LEDs work and grow great corals, but not the same as MH or T5 and hard core old time acropora nuts tend to prefer MH and T5.

For the record all my corals are grown from frags and I have been growing acropora and creating "reefs" for about 2 decades.

I could care less how many decades you have grown your frags. Regardless what they look like how long u have been growing I would never respond in the mannor you did because I'm a decent human being. Get off your high horse. You didn't even let me post the ones I wanted to post. For the record I have 11 new branches coming up out of that skirt you were referring to that look like normal acropora now.

That would be manner not mannor.

You are obviously angry at me and missing the whole point. This is a thread to discuss the efficacy of lighting. Your pictures do not prove the point you were making. There is absolutely nothing personal in that comment. If you want to take it personally than I honestly and genuinely apologize. Look over the history of my posts and you will find that I enjoy a good argument, but I NEVER get personal. 'nough said and this will be my last post to you on this thread . . .

He's posting pictures of the current best SPS tank on the planet that we know about. :)

2 years under LED according to the article, but I suspect folks will claim most of the growth was under MH or T5. Doesn't matter, either they are right or wrong, I honestly do not know the answer, but I'd like too.

I tried to grab some pictures from that article, but you can't link to TOTM pictures so I'll have to settle for comments. Looking at that tank there are numerous corals that have different growth patterns and coloration from tanks with MH and T5. Again and again and again . . . if you like that then excellent, but those of us that have been doing this for some time prefer the alternative, and THAT is why I changed BACK from LEDs to metal halide.

SMH yet another elitist on RC. See ya pal. Oh yeah by the way I never posted any pictures u didn't let me. So yeah i never did prove my point cause yet again you didnt let me duh.....Thanks for the grammar check there I'm assuming you got my point either way. This thread is for anyone with a RC account believe it or not. You made it personal with the way you responded. Apology accepted.
I suspect u are very old.

After reading the "argument" as a total outsider, I see one person getting very offended that another wasn't impressed with their couple of pictures, and the "offender" trying time and time again to clear the air and "apologize" for nothing done wrong.

I don't have a dog in this "fight" but I do find it curious that you mention several times that he "didn't let" you post more pictures...unless he's at your home hugging your computer, smart phone, or tablet...I fail to see how he is still not letting you post more pictures. Please. Post away. Be aware nobody is stopping you. Only someone commenting on what you actually did post. If you have more, let's have it

Not to pick sides but JP is not an elitist. Yes he can come across a little strong but he is a great help if you need it, his bark is far worse then his bite. I decided not to judge him by how he says things but by the help and knowledge he will share. Turns out he is far more generous then you can imagine with helping out in this hobby.

I guess I'll have to take your word for it.

Maybe you should reread it or remain an outsider. He went and found two pictures I posted awhile ago. One of them was taken like a year ago. I was going to post two completely different ones more related to what he was requesting. Did you miss the part where he called them "crappy?" Yea ok, real nice get outta here man.

And how is constant small insults trying to clear the air and apologize? Am I missing something ? Lol unbelievable.

It was tank of the month in January 2015, he switched to LED in Dec ... let's call it January 2013. That's 2 years under LED.

Ya, i can read and do the math. :)
I was curious as to what kind of growth he's seen since then compared to the old lighting and how much of what we see now is from led and how much is from the old lighting. There wasn't any mention of it there. Haven't read his thread though. Maybe someone asked there.

As I already stated, I'm impressed that he was at least able to keep things looking good.

When it becomes pretty common that SPS are doing better in LED lit tanks than MH lit tanks, that's when I'll convert back. But while the majority is the other way around, I'm holding on to my MH. Not literally. Ouch.

JPMagyar god damn you have a nice tank man. If you are ever in South Florida please come pay my tank a visit and I promise to pay you in beer :)

Reread, or remain an outsider = either side with me or get lost. I never said he was a nice guy. I was even called out by him a page or two back on this same thread but I didn't let it hurt my feelings. The only thing unbelievable here is how sensitive your feelings are. Take it easy

It is my understanding that both growth patterns and color are not single variable controlled. From what I recall growth is mostly influenced by by flow and color by some combination of food and light. Is this incorrect?

I have not read one single concrete piece of evidence yet in this thread that LED is somehow superior to MH or T5 in maintaining color, growth pattern, and health of SPS corals specifically. The MH and T5 guys have hundreds upon hundreds of concrete pieces of evidence that SPS has better color, growth pattern and overall health under these types of lights. Thats enough for me. Most of the argument has been either this guy has LEDs now but the majority of his coral was actually grown under MH or the spectral graphs seem to be somewhat similar.

I do hope LED gets it right someday. It just dont think they have right now. Progress is good. Im glad we arent all still using VHOs like we did in the old days. But for the hardcore, ultra picky SPS crew, its just not cutting it.
