Anyone up for another 135 Thread?

Too bad you live in Texas, if you were closer you'd get my 135, and then be able to get a Foxface :D

Darn! Too bad I'm in Texas too. Oh well I'll sing the song to help me feel better.

Texas our Texas all hail the mighty state Texas our Texas so wonderful so great. Boldest and strongest withstanding every test....um.. i forget the rest.

So i really need some color in my tank. I almost picked up a Lamarcks angel, but decided not to risk my corals. But now I have my heart set on a Big Longnose Butterfly (forcipiger longirostris) :0

What is the best way to scrape coralline off the tank? I have left it take of the the sides and the back, but it's trying to take over the front and I say NO! I will stop it I must.

Oh noo Mikes here! Everybody run!

Jk Mike

Yay a pico
Your tank is looking amazing!

Just found this thread and 2 hours later just finished reading it. congrats on how devoted you are to this hobby, at 15 I can imagine it is tough.

I understand how a 135 now that it is set up seems overwhelming to you, and can see your point about wanting to downgrade.

but 2 20 gallons i dont think is your answer, i think in 3 more months you will also regret this. after reading the whole thread it seems that you are rushing into this whole retro fit a computer desk for a fish stand the same way you rushed into setting up your 135. (chip in glass)

you might look into something in between like a 65. doesnt take a lot of space but you can really stock it. a happy medium if you will.

add a 30 breeder for a refugium and your off and running again

Maybe you could even look in trading the 135 for a used 90 then plumb the 2 20s into the 90 and then you would have the best of both worlds if your up for that. Might be more money though. I think that would be a pretty cool idea to have both a large tank and a nano. You don't even have to setup 2 20s you can stick to 1 and have that be a sps tank and then the 90 be a lps and softie tank. I think that would be a much better idea. And hey you find out a way to save money as well.

I don't see why you guys are still hanging on the "nanos are much harder" point. Yes, true nanos are much harder. But mine will just be nano displays. What do you think the 100g sump is for? It will be MORE water volume than I've got now, making it MORE stable. If I make a wrong move in one of these tanks, it WON'T be a mine going BOOM, it will be just the same as me making a mistake in the tank now! Smaller species tanks look cool to me! AHHHHH

Mullet, you make good points. Thank you for understanding me. I'm not rushing this plan, I've thought about it for a solid month or so before I sprung it on all of you. I'm still planning, making diagrams, all that good stuff. Yes, I would like to use a computer stand, only because I don't think I have the time or money to build a new stand. If someone can provide me an idea of the time/money involved, I would be interested. I did like the 58RR I saw at the LFS, but then no species tanks. It is a nice tank though.

Aquaguru, that was my original downgrade plan. I would make the 135 a FOWLR, and then tie in a 20g reef. Keep the halides, pumps, skimmer, etc. However, I don't have the space or location for that. That was very disappointing for me, as that would've been ideal. I think this new plan is second best though.

i whould give anything for a 135 yet you just throw it out the window
Because I've tried it and I don't like it. People with smaller tanks than mine that want to upgrade think I'm crazy, since they "whould give anything for a 135." Maybe a big tank, at this age, just isn't for me. It may be for you, but not me.

fine what ever you want it is your desision man i hope it is the best for your fish:sad1: :sad1: :sad1:
My stocking plans have changed accordingly, so no fish will have bad homes. Two fish in the SPS 20, 2 clowns in the anemone 20, none in the 10 and Larry in the sump.

Well if you are set on having nano tanks then i say go for it.

I have had 4 different tanks in the past 6 years so i know how the itch is once it gets in your brain festering around.

here is an idea though

instead of the computer desk why not make a nano "entertainment center"?

2x8's and concrete blocks set up on a wall any way you want.

refugium on the top of the wall and gravity drains feeding all the other tanks underneath until it reaches the sump on the floor.
you could have 1,2,3,4 tanks all setup. your corals will love all the natural food coming out of the refugium and would almost look like your own personal fish store!

just make your plumbing clean and maybe put some plants around and wala

wall of fish....

just an idea

This is the type of feedback I like! I could put blankets or something over the concrete blocks to hide them. How would I go about mounting a large fuge on the wall though? Hmm...

The_fishkeeper86 said:
actually i was talkin more about larry i would really consider takin hi back to the LFS

Why? The fuge will still be lit, and it will still have rocks and food. Just opaque walls.

the cinder block would just be the frame i belive you would have to build some kind of reinforced woden shelf type of thing just a thought?

I was thinking basically building a plateau out of cinder blocks, and putting a sheet of 3/4" or 1" plywood on top. Would that be ok?

2x8's would hold the weight and i would leave the concrete blocks exposed for that "industrial look". build it like a pyramid a very wide base taking up the wall and slowly get narrower as you go up the wall by stacking more concret blocks on top of the wood.
that way it will support the weight and not be top heavy.

attach the wood to the concrete using anle brackets and tap cons(not large diameter or it will crack the block) and attach to wall with wall anchors(just so it doesnt get tipsy) and fall over!

if 2x8's seem too narrow then strips of 1" plywood any width you want and 2x4's for bracing and basically just build a book shelf for fish...

he won't listen he's a kid i never listened to what people told me when i was that young he is gonna do what he wants no matter what anyone says he already has it planned out in his head.the only way he'll learn is by messing up.he's gonna look back and be like what the hell was i thinking back then i should have listened to these guys. and then we can all say we told ya so

Alright, so all kids don't listen? If Tyler didn't want to listen to you or recieve your advice, would he have posted a thread asking for it? He is still trying to decide! Just because you were a kid who never listened does not mean Tyler is, too.

And "only learn by messing up"? Who says he'll mess up?

i give him 2 months with the nano's and he'll be out of reefing for good. hahahaha smaller is harder you know conditions in small tanks can turn quick and fast your gonna have to test everyday all your parameters. the one time you skip a day could me total disaster.all i can say is good luck if your frustuarated now hahaha wait and see.then we can start a thread " see what happens when you have no patience"or "what not to do" just jokin tyler
A t t o s

Generally speaking, smaller can be considered harder. But his future setup will be BIGGER. More water volume. THAT is why people say smaller is hard, because they have less water volume.

And, finally, this is addressed to everyone whining about how much they'd kill for a 135 gallon. Dudes! Enjoy what you have! Your tank (much like your life) is what you make it. A small tank can be nice, too! [shameless plug] look at mine! 16 anemones, 4 clams, and several corals in a 15, with big tank skimming, a 5g sump, and a halide light. [/shameless plug] I originally had the choice between large or small (55 or 15). I chose the 15 for my reef because I liked it better. Tyler will have the option to keep incompatible species now. He can get 250w halides and overlight his tanks, as opposed to underlighting them in a large tank. Equipment, rock, sand, etc. is cheaper. They are easier to make full. And you can have a whole lotta them.

The fact that eveyone seems to think that a 135 is automatically better than anything smaller is just a bunch of feces. You all have smaller tanks, but you are so focused on getting a bigger one (or dreaming of such) that you can't even take the time to make yours better. Come on, now, guys!
