Anyone up for another 135 Thread?

Mission accomplished. Full tank shot tomorrow after water clears. I made a much better aquascape.

ok cool. This thread is moving sloooooowwww. More pics more pics!!!! I don't like my devil finger.... drops too many fingers...On a side note my Squamosa darkened up and the pocillopora i bought that was a dark brown turned pink! I love t-5s!

Nick, it will start moving fast soon. I just had to finally overcome the valonia; now I have lots of open spaces with no algae whatsoever for corals!

New acquisitions for the month:
Frogspawn (3 heads) - $40
Pair of Pink Skunks or Percs, haven't decided ~$40, I don't know the price
30 Ceriths - $21
30 Nassarius - $18
1 Emerald - $2.50

Sweet! I noticed once my Emerald crab annialated my bubble alage and with the addition of macro in my fuge. The bubble algae is much more under control.. growing in small areas/spots not overrunning the tank

Ok, I have to clean the glass, and then I'll take a full tank shot.

During Operation Lawnmower, I accidentally fragged my monti. Snapped right off the base...I was warned by previous owner that it is very brittle..I guess so! So now I have two monti frags; one that needs to encrust, and one that needs to grow from a base. My Devils Hand didn't like it very much, but in a day or so it will be fine. I probably stirred some stuff up from moving the rocks, but my skimmer and carbon should handle that. My Colt coral is very stupid as well. When I was cleaning my rocks, it detached from where it was happy (I had left it's rock in the tank, as I was unsure if it had attached or not). So I rubberbanded it to another rock, as I had no needle and thread or bridal veil around. So, now, a day later, I find half of it in a crevice, and the other half inside of my rock structure. Should I just let it do it's thing? Both are getting some light...I think it would stress it more to try and attach it again. What do you think?

Yeah I don't like mine much either. Just when he starts to get happy, he goes ahead and breaks in half and goes into a crevice.

I added base rock to the tank that I had, since I needed more rock to get the center higher. So the left side of my tank is pretty ugly. The Frogspawn I'm getting next week should add some nice color though.

Hello fellow reefers! I have been dancing with this idea for a while now...hear me out.

Right now, I have a 135g. Euroreef CS6-2+ skimmer, Mag18 return, 2x 250w DE halides, and a few corals, a Foxface, and a Peppermint shrimp and an emerald. Tank started up in March. I've never liked the tank (the glass box) I have now. The trim, overflow, etc, it's not good. It's been ok, but lately I think I've gotten in over my head. The costs are starting to rise, with the addition of livestock, and the maintaining a tank this big is a bit tough for me. Just so you know, I'm 15, so I don't have endless $$. Anyways, here are my thoughts..

I have a nice sturdy computer desk at home, with a space underneath. I want to have 2x 20L tanks, and one 10g. The 20s will be an SPS/LPS tank, and an clown/anemone/clam tank. The 10g will house my Frogspawn, and maybe a few other softies like Xenia and Anthelia if the Frogspawn decides not to sting them.

I'll get two pendants, so that one will hang over each 20. The 10 will be in the excess light spread, since the Frogspawn doesn't need high light.

Now for the kicker. You are probably thinking, "250w DE over a 20L? And he's complaining about maintenance? Think about topoff!" Well, here it goes. Since I already have a huge skimmer, and lots of LR, and a big return pump, why not use it?

All three little tanks will be drilled, with 1.5" drains. Underneath my desk will go a 100g Rubbermaid stock tank. The CS6-2+, aka "Monster," will perform in there. I will put the rock from the 135, which I don't use in the display tanks, in there, along with chaeto, and my Foxface, since I don't want to sell him. The Mag18 will pump up, and will be split in three. I have all the plumbing, unions, etc. leftover from my 135. One exit, reduced to 3/4 Locline nozzles to each tank. Each exit will have a ball valve, so as to control the flow to each. The SPS/LPS will have the highest flow, and the clown/anemone tank will have decent flow, as will the softie tank. The Mag18 will provide the circulation for all three tanks.

The first 20, SPS/LPS, will have a nice assortment of high light/high flow corals. It will be BB, so that the high flow will not bother any sand. The fish in this tank will be a Fridmani Pseudochromis, and a Sixline Wrasse. Cerith snails and Trochus snails will be cleaners.

The second 20, clown/anemone will have a thin layer of CC, for looks. The fish in this tank will either be a pair of Percs or a pair of Pink Skunks. I don't know which kind of anemone. Any suggestions? Cerith snails and Trochus snails will be cleaners.

The 10 will contain the Frogspawn and some softies. It will also have CC for looks. Cerith snails and Trochus snails will be cleaners.
I will run carbon, so to take out all impurities which softies might emit.

The skimmer is huge, the fuge is huge, the return pump is huge, the lighting is huge, the possibilities are huge. All I have to buy are the three tanks, the stock tank, and the pendants. I will sell my 135 and stand and sump, so I will have some money to spend. Best of all, the smaller tanks will be cheaper in the long run, and more manageable for me, a 15 year old.

What do you think? Do you think I should stick up my guns and keep going with my 135, or should I do this? I know that a 135 reef would be spectacular, I can invision it, I just don't see myself being able to accomplish it. Well?
Thanks a bunch...

Tyler

too much to read right now will read and give feed back tomorrow morning... my dad hasn't paid me yet...maybe he can pay me in a calcium test kit and an Ultra Max... they would do good under 4x39w t-5s? my squasy is fine.

P.S Like my Signature??? Eh? EH?

How "sturdy" is the desk?

You're looking at around 220# to 250# for the approx. 20g total in tank volume.... (counting sand, rock, water, etc.)

I'm not sure if it's sturdy enough, thanks for bringing that up. If I decide to do this, then I will certainly either reinforce it with lots of 2x4s or build my own stand.

Patience Grasshopper. A 135 is a huge tank for someone who is young and on a limited budget to deal with...

I think what I'm hearing is...I don't want to wait "8 years" for a full blown 135 Reef....

Well then damn kid! Why did you buy such a big tank??? :p

All kidding aside...trying to maintain MULTIPLE systems is a task in itself...no matter how large...

You're trying to do too many things at once!
20 Gallon tanks leave ZERO room for error.

Sell all that junk....buy yourself a 40 or 50 Breeder, some powerheads, some nice lighting, and a heater and be done with it.

My 6 inch Crocea looks like a monster in my tank....in yours it might look like a pebble...:p

John, I explained in the other thread. I'm not discouraged because it's going slow. In fact, everything is growing like mad! I just don't know how I can afford this monster! I never really guaged the size of it though...it is too big. I've established that. I know I'm downsizing.

But you missed the kicker. It's not a 20g. It's 2 20s and 1 10 all tied together with a 100g stock tank. So it actually has larger water volume than what I've got now. Thus, more room for error.

I still have some thinking to do, but I'm pretty sure the 135 has to go. I may go down to a 120 at least, but I'm pretty sure I'm downsizing.

As is shown in your tank. No sump, no EVIL plumbing
Your tank is very very nice, and how did your clam get to 6" already?!

There's a reason I converted the 125 from Freshwater to a Reef and am consolidating the 6g Urchin, 2x1g Picos, and the 40g Reef into it.... Much less work.

One tank can be almost automated.

A 135 shouldn't cost you that much a month *once it's setup*. But, I'm one of those people that does a WC every couple of months.... ;)

No need to buy large corals - buy frags and let them grow out. That's half the fun! (www.seacrop.com has nice frags and the 12/$75 packs are a great buy! Just a happy customer.....)

What costs are too high? I really don't see how you would save any money at all. I think you would just create more work and headaches for a less satisfying result. If I had to take care of 3 smaller tanks I may even lose interest.

There are a few costs...for one, livestock. All stuff I've bought is from frags, which yes is cheap, but it will definitely add up. Same with the small tanks, so the costs would be the same. But flow and lighting...I still am saving for another halide, and either Seio or Tunze. Those both are a lot of money for me.
And then there is my tank. I really don't like how it is setup. The sump is cramped, the stand is small, the tank's plumbing and drilling are all wrong for the setup I want. I should've planned the setup better, and not rushed. I should've thought more about what kind of things I wanted before I bought the tank, but I hurried into it.

Anyways, I'm not sure what I'm going to do, but I am sure I'm not staying with this setup. I need to think carefully, and plan very carefully, before I make any decisions. I think I jumped in with two feet, and am starting to drown. <- This sounds very lame, but is remotely true.

I'm definitely downsizing, I think that this is a bit overwhelming for me. Maybe a 40g breeder would work well? I like the looks of a 120 too. Seems much more manageable. I just need to plan something that would work for me, then put it into motion. Working with this tank would be very hard. Current setup is not working for me, not working at all.
