anyone using TYREE's "TRIzonal" (cryptic) filtration method ???

Thank you John. I will see if that might be possible. Pittsburgh is not that far from Long Island and Dave (my hubby) and I enjoy motorcycling. My friend who lives in Long Island said that we could take a ferry from somewhere (maybe Connecticut or Rhode Is) to avoid the worst traffic. So you guys are thinking maybe August?

Wow, I have a high school girl friend who lives in Long Island and would love to visit her. It would be cool to meet up with all you guys as well for a lunch or something, but I am feeling a bit awkward inviting myself.
Dawn,
Its been 4 years since I meet you in Pittsburg. It would be a blast to connect again. August 27 weekend is my reunion. I will coordinate with Paul to connect with him during weekdays before or after August 27 weekend.

PS: Considering Labor Day weekend, I will say that the weekdays before August 27.

Patrick, it would be very nice to see you again as well. I would love to meet Paul B and John L too.

25 years ago, the ecosystem my mud/macro refugium was started with 1/2” of miracle mud. Over the years, the mud depth increased to 1” and is spongy to the touch. When I converted to cryptic refugium, I stacked 3 layers of eggcrate to keep live rock out of the mud. Cryptic sponges were seeded from a reefer friend who introduced me to cryptic sponges. Thank you @Timfish.

Last time I visited Long Island, I went claming in Long Island Sound. It was a blast dragging feet in the sand and pulling up clams. When I mentioned to @Paul B about missing him on that visit, he invited me to come during the week. Weekends for him are busy taking his friends with college degrees boating, because they are still working and he is retired.

Talk with Dan Sanchez at Gulf Live Rock.
Thank you very much Patrick. I ordered 10 lbs of live rock from Dan. I mentioned that you recommend him and that i was looking for good sponge coverage. The rock was excellent! Lots of sponge. The rock on the right side.

I have had diver collected rock, that sprouted Red tree sponges and gorgonions a year after being in the tank. When I first got live rock from the divers, I got a magnifying glass with a light and my grandson & I would lay on our bellies checking out critters in cryptic refugium.

Dan is a good source of knowledge on biodiversity of fauna & fana of the natural reef. Consider inviting him as expert help to identify critters that hitchhike. I think he would be receptive to that role.

I got the sponge seed rock from Steve Tyree and setup a dark area at the bottom of my refugium.

So that is the package Tyree sells. I have was going to talk to him about it but never got a chance. I thought about getting that to seed one of my fuges. I know he sells books on the subject and I think he did some talks on the method. I often thought of getting some of the books but I pretty much know what is in there from reading his other stuff over the years. Cryptic sponges and sea squirts are great.

I had a friend who used this method and no skimmer. He had this large aquarium with slower flow and tons of branch rock and it was chocked full with sponges and critters living in the dark. Worked well for him.

I am trying to get back to more natural filtration and use more algae. I am really starting to like macros and sea grasses again. The prices on corals have been getting insane plus I have never followed the trends in the hobby and did the less popular stuff. I guess I go across the grain.

With sponges you may want to add some silicate to the water from time to time to help their growth just beware to watch for diatoms.

With respect to sponges, silicates and diatoms; makeup water to my tank comes from Middle Trinity at 1000’ depth. This aquifer was an ancient inland sea that was loaded with diatoms. I have been growing ornamental & cryptic sponges for > 5 yrs and following recommendations I added silicates to 120G reef tank. Imagine my surprise when drops of liquid silicate concentrate turned into precipitate crystals. So my makeup is full of silicates from diatoms in an ancient inland sea.

Using natural filtration of bacteria, algae and cryptic sponges, minimum water change is a reality that works for me. For 11 months, no water change. During the twelfth month, I do two 100% water changes in one week.
