Anyone with Hellfrick Firefish

I've seen them on the Sea Dwelling list lately and I am thinking of adding 2-3 to my Hawaiian fish theme 120. Anyone had/have any. They are coming out of Hawaii.

I think the helfrichi you are seeing are coming THROUGH Hawaii, not being collected in the Hawaiian chain itself. (Randall gives their distribution as "Polynesia except Hawaii).
I've only worked with one of these fish. It developed some odd scoliosis of its spine, but I'm not attributing that to the species of fish that it is. I was attracted to this fish at first due to its rarity and subtle colors, but as I think more about it, I prefer the decora species now - more colorful and more robust If you want a true Hawaiin species, you'd have to stick with magnifica, its the only species of the genus Nemateleotris recorded from there.

Yup, the helfirichis imported through Hawaii usually come from the Marshalls - they're not native here.

N. magnifica is found here, but it's so rare that it'd look out of place in a Hawaii-themed tank.

Thanks a lot guys, I'm trying to keep my tank authentic. But the rare ones are what I'm looking for. Such as the dussumiei (Palani) tang that I got. I don't think I'll be interested in the chezzy, run of the mill, firefish. I was trying to look for an alternative to anthias (which I love).

Oh, that brings up another question, do Barletts come out of Hawaii, I saw them on the list on Sea Dwelling (I think) and were listed Hawaiian. The only ones I could remember from Hawaii were the Bicolor and the fancy longfin vantralis-like one.

Thanks again.

Bartlett's are not Hawaiian, either. A lot of Pacific fish are imported through Hawaii, so aquarium dealers often have them listed wrong.

We have 4 species of anthias: Bicolor, Thompson's, Hawaiian Longfin (slightly different than Ventralis), and Yellow. The last two are from deep water, especially the Yellow Anthias which is usually collected from 300-400'.

Check http://www.marinelifephotography.com/ for a good list of Hawaiian fish (probably the best one online.
