I will be starting a 41"x29"x25 end overflow soon and was thinking about a 2 island structure but want to see some ideas.

Please share what you like and dislike about your islands.

Pics are also great.
Thanks,
DEREK

islands

that is what I am trying to do right now, but I am not a good aquascaper, another problem is I have shallow tank, only 16" deep

I'm actually making some islands as we speak with marco rocks and e-marco adhesive.. I'll toss up some pics when I'm done.. but they're just on my bench right now in the garage, not even in the tank yet

I have a 60 X 24 X 20. I LOVE my aquascaping! I have a large centerpiece with rock on the overflow wall and a zoa tree and Monti/Acan island on the other end.

Here the 2 sides viewable. It's a peninsula. You can see more pics here:

As for what i like about islands, I find it more interesting when there is a good use of space. the 'vegetable cart' style of landscaping has always been boring to me, despite how nice the corals may be. If the rock looks interesting without corals, you can't lose once you place corals on the rock. Also, the sand, or space between gives a sense of depth.

I have 48x24x24 with two islands,I really like how it looks but main thing about going this route was to give more swimming space for fish and have better flow around rocks.

I have 2 main structures at each end, with high flow and height for high light as well as ovehangs for shade. Then a central part with flow over a broad field and deeper areas for less light. Small rocks serve as islands for aggressive livestock like xenia and GSP.

Still bare, slowly filling in, but here's a FTS:

Hi here is mine :)

Mine is definitely sub 1lb/gallon in my 75... it's 50lbs of marco rocks with like 10lbs of rubble in the mix with it as I was building the structures...

I do plan on putting a bit more liverock down in the sump, but I wanted a much more open tank this time compared to my fruit shelf 29g I had

I have three separate islands separated by sand. You can't tell as much through pics but in person its really cool to watch the fish swim in between.

i took this picture after i re did the right side after i won a bunch of rocks at my reef club raffle. i am pretty happy with it.

Islands are the way to go. Make sure you make them assymetric --if they are the same size it will look awkward.

I really like the look of the asymmetric islands with the valley for fish to swim through. I hope to duplicate that look, perhaps with a 3rd central island in my standard 180 RR. I'll have to do what Mark did, which is put some LR into the sump/refugium, or else I'll have too much LR in the DT.
