AP12 or AP24

my school requires a school project to graduate. you can choose to do one on anything, and i chose to do one on a saltwater tank. they just simply looks AWESOME!!! i was wondering, which one should i get? the aquapod 12 w/ 70W MH or 24 w/ 150W MH? and what are the advantages for the AP24 (besides the size, of course)?

The size is the biggest advantage. The more volume of water you have in the tank the more room you have for error when something goes wrong. i.e. if a fish dies in a 12g tank it will have a larger impact on your water quality than it would in a 24g tank. Also, you will have more room for "stuff." Of course with the extra room comes extra cost.

I have a 24g AP with 150w MH and I am having constant problems with the tank. I have a protein skimmer thats rated for tanks 25-75g, I go weekly 5-10 gal water changes, I dont overfeed, nothing is dead...but my nitrates are 80-100, and have been that way for months now. Someone told me that the rear chambers collect detritus and it sits and rots back there. No matter how hard I try, I cannot siphon it out. I went and bought a 26g bowfront (used) for $40 and will be transferring everything over to that tank in a few weeks. I love the look of the all in ones, but I wont get another one, and will sell this one once everyone is out. I still have the stock hood.

You could do something along those lines, buy a non-all in one tank, and set it up completely and it will cost around the same price as a 24g AP with 150w MH which is somewhere around $350 and that doesnt include a protein skimmer. You can get a tank for $40-60, the light $200 on ebay, skimmer $100, pumps $75, and if you want a fuge, $10 for a 10 gal tank = total around $450. A lot of that stuff you can get everything cheaper buying them from responsible reefers, or ebay. See if there's a local marine aquarists society around you, that's how I found my new tank. My new tank is already predrilled and painted. It also came with an overflow box, but I need to make a new one, as I broke it already (oops).

Just my thoughts, coming from someone who has had that exact tank since April, added my MH not even 2 months later.

thanks for the website herostar, but i've read around reef websites that the viper MH isnt so good. something about the bulbs always lose its intensity.

sugarfox, i do believe its because of the filters. when i had planted FW setup, the filter in my canisterfilter always was a problem, high levels of ammonia and everythign else. once i cleaned it and took it out, it all went down. im thinking about removing everythign in the back and make it into a refuge w/ chaeto for filtration.

im looking into ordering an AP24 from dr.FS. i hate you nano reefers(sarcasm)! with those nice looking nanos! lol makes me want one more and more =]

Actually I dont have any filters/pads/bioballs in my tank, I have had the fuge set up in the rear chambers for months, with no change in nitrate levels. I have 5 lbs live rock rubble, and lots of chaeto. I also have a light on it for the reverse photo period. I removed the ceramic rings and bioballs the day I got the tank. The blue filter pads stayed in there for only around 3-4 months. My tank has been up since April.

After hearing from other all in one owners that have the same problems, I found out its the detritus that accumulates at the bottom of the chambers. I cannot get it all out of the chambers, and when I get a good amount, it seems to come right back. I'd rather just not deal with it.

Good luck with your tank though!! Hopefully you wont have this annoying problem!

yeah, what im thinking is just having corals for a LONG time without any fish. and if i do get a fish i would probably get a small one like the agressive 3-spot damsel. and thanks! i need all the luck i need as this is going to be an important project to complete.

well, it looks like im just going to get an aquapod12 w/ 70W MH from dr. f&s. the local aquarium store sells one for $329.99+TAX= around $355 or so. dr.f&s sells for $279.99+S&H= just under $300. i'll save myself almost $60! i'll get it within 7business days. dont you think saving $60 is WORTH the wait? I DO!! o wait, PLUS i have a coupon for $5 off my first purchase and im going to add a small magfloat which is $4.79. its just like getting it FREE!

day 2 after the purchase, still have 5 more days til it comes. im so anxious to get it!!!! should i have a natural-looking rockwork (low rockwork) or should i stack up the rocks? I CANT WAIT!!!

okay, now i REALLY need the tank. my project is due in just less than 3 months. also, can anyone help me on how to change the title (if possible) of this thread?

Not sure on changing the title, but , just so you're aware, the AP comes standard with a magfloat.

To keep crud from building up in the rear chambers, I use filter floss to catch junk coming over the weir and change it 2 or 3 times a week. It's cheap and doesn't accumulate stuff over time the way a sponge does.

Enjoy your new tank!

do you really? man dont i feel dumb =P hopefully i will get it by today the least, more likely tomorrow. i will post pix once i get it and then this thread will really get started. i need to think about what to do with the back compartments for filter.

eskie,
i did some asking around in the forum of dr.fostersmith and found out that the aquapod does not come standard with a magfloat

For the record...mine did not come with the magfloat :)

But I also agree with the filter floss, I bought a large sheet and changed it twice a week.

I plan on using it again when I set the new tank up.

oh. well, i should look to get the filter floss too. how about adding a small powerhead that aims towards the bottom of the refuge in the back? think that would help with the detritus? upon checking the fedex tracking system a couple of hours ago, my AP arrived in sacramento at around 4:30pm. i should be getting it tomorrow. im so exited!! i've already got about 8lb of liverock and about 25lbs of livesand. a couple of the liverock was big with holes in it, so i just used a hammer and a chisel to break it to smaller pieces so i can make nice rockwork with it.

okay, that makes two (magfloat thingy)

Sugar, I use the filter floss that comes in a large bag much like a pillow. I just pull a handful out and stuff it around to fit. I've read of people using the filter floss sheets that bits of floss material kept shedding into their tanks. If yours is staying intact, then you're set. Is it floss, or a large blue filter pad?

It's odd, my AP 24 came with a float.
