Apartment RODI Unit

Hey all,

I was wondering if anyone knew a good RODI unit for an apartment? I'm not really much of a plumber so I'm not going to be able to do anything too crazy and I'm looking at graduating soon so I'm thinking I'll be moving out of my college town in the next year or so. (Long story short, I want something cost effective, not too permanent, and EASY to install/work!)

Any suggestions would be great! I'm just tired of buying water!

I bought the "value plus" 75 GPD system from BRS. It might be more than what you want to spend, but the nice thing is that it comes with 2 different connectors that can hook up to different types of sinks.

It's not particularly small, but you could move it around if need be - the nice thing is that you don't have to hard plumb it, you can just unscrew it from the faucet.

I know that you can also pick up adapters for your kitchen faucet to take a garden hose size fitting - I had one of those adapters when I had a ton of freshwater tanks going and was doing water changes with a python siphon.

Hmm, the size and everything looks great on that one and I know I'd be able to just hook it right up to a faucet. (Which is definitely something that I'm looking for) It IS a little expensive though, anyone know of a model similar to this one but cheaper?

Marine Depot sells the 25gpd SpectraPure system for $150, but does not include the faucet adapter. Those can be found anywhere though. I actually have this same unit, but upgrade the membrane a couple months ago to a 90gpd, and I have it under my sink in the kitchen of my apartment. I also was no plumber, but I put together this thread on how to install it under your sink in a non-permanent way, starting at post 11: http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2250804

go with a spectrapure.

get a drinking water setup..."T" off of it to do automatic top off or to just make water for mixing.

it is totally portable, so take it with you.

You need drinking water, just say no to bottled water...

Ned, I just got the BRS today. I didn't want to spend the money either, but the last time I bought a cheaper one, water bills out of control. Somethings you pay for up front that pay for itself in the short or long run. I think this is one of those.

Thanks for all the great input everyone! I'm really liking that refurbished idea. Even though they're refurbished, they come with brand new filters right?

Oh hey, that's awesome! I was so afraid that I was going to have to hard wire something into the plumbing system! Thanks kissman!

np been using the same one for years works great! I keep my RO/DI unit under my sink and bring it out as needed!

Just an anecdotal thought, but why would your water bill be any different between units? If your RO/DI system is running properly, with a 3:1 to 4:1 ration, they should all use roughly the same amount of water...

I'm in an apartment with an RO/DI setup that couldn't have been much easier to install.

I called Buckeye Field Supply and they put a config together that was appropriate for my maintenance and top off water making needs, then packaged everything I'd need to hook it up. I just put a splitter on my washer cold water faucet line, then the tubing just locked into place. I went ahead and mounted mine to the wall in the wash room and 10 minutes later I was making water.

Easy, portable, and Buckeye Field Supply has great service in my 5+ years experience.

No auto shut off. Stupid thing continued to pour water out the waste line even though it was not processing RO water.

I have a spectrapure unit and use the quick connect faucet adapter. When I want to make water I just snap the coupler on, put the drain hose in the shower and the rodi water hose in a bucket. No permanent fixtures!

Ahhh, yes, excellent point haha. But, you haven't truly lived until you've flooding your kitchen a couple times with the RO/DI wide open. Luckily, mine is pretty predictable and I set a timer for my 5 gallon jug fills. I just have to remember NOT to leave my place when I start filling.

Go on BRS for sure. You'll get a unit for a good price and you can take it with you. I did the same thing Breiter3 did. I got a Y splitter at Home Depot and hooked the RO unit into my Washer Machine line. I use the dirty water for laundry and for watering plants. When I don't need the water I just stick the tube into the washer out drain.
