Apex -RKE

What are the real differences of these two controllers? Anyone have either one and weighed the pros cons of the two?

this is a huge can of worms, and i only own an RKL, but i'll mention a few points..

the apex has a built in webserver, so you can monitor stuff and make changes from anywhere, the rke does have net, but the myreef software that will let you do remote changes instead of just monitoring is supposed to be out soon, but they've been saying that for like a year now...

the neptune products use a programming language to set up your controller, where the digital aquatics ones use a menu system that is very easy to use.

when it comes down to it they are pretty similar in price and features, and you can't really go wrong either way, it's just a few nitpicky things that people get all worked up about.

Do you know how effective these are with topoff,i.e- do you need to add a seperate module to be accurate or just a float switch?

as far as i know they both do ATO, with the RKE you would need an SL1 or SL2, those include temp probes, ph probes, and inputs for ATO, also the SL2 does salinity. i think you might need to purchase a float switch kit as well. the RKE kits come with an SL1 included. i don't know off the top of my head what is required on the apex...

The Apex lite has 6 or 8 inputs for discretes (IE a float switch). You can buy their breakout box, or if you are into DIY just cut a mindin 8 cable and create your own

I have the Apex and like it very much. I don't have any experience with the rke so I can't bash it or praise it.
The breakout box mentioned above works great for ato on the Apex and I just bought a float switch from ebay for 10 bucks and rigged it up with an oldschool powersweep bracket with suctioncups and use an aqualifter pump.
The net functions for the apex are great I have the aquanotes app on the Iphone and can see my params and control all outlets from anywhere with cell service.
And as far as the programming language it is relatively easy to to grasp and get exactly what you want out of the controller, anything you may have questions about can usually be answered on their sponser forum here on RC.
Lastly from what I hear of the RKE it too is a great tool to reefers.
