apf600 ?

was looking on the deltec site and this skimmer is rated at 200 gallon heavily stocked. just trying to put together the question of how they determine this. i am running two skimmers at the moment. my euro 6-3 is rated for 135 gallon on my 150 . i have 5 tangs and 11 clownfish. i would consider my self heavily stocked.

just trying to figure this out.
the sedra 5000 i think pulls around 680 and mine has the mesh mod which i think would boost me closer to 800 if im lucky

i would put that skimmer on a 100gal tank, but i have seen some awesome tanks around 180gals with that same type of skimmer.

I would listen to any of the rated specs.

If you want that type of skimmer, the H&S A150 F2001 is similar (better?) than the APF600 and is closer in price to the AP600.

im just trying to see why euro only rates thiers at 135 gallons whereas for the same liter of air and really more in my opinion

it seems that it should be rated for higher gallon usage.

if the apf600 is 500lph and 5 inch diameter and shorter than my euro which is taller bigger around and probably close to 800lph should be at least good for 200 gallons

Because the manufacturers just make up those numbers. They've got nothing to do with anything.

APF 600

APF 600

I ran the apf 600 on my 100 gallon. It is a good skimmer, but not great. I would not put it on a bigger tank. There are better skimmers out there for the money you spend on a deltec.

like H&S,ATI,DAS

I would ask your question in the deltec forum, alot of APF600 users there. I have a AP600 and I love it. Alot of deltec haters in the lighting, filtration forum, if you want to see nog shots do a search on the deltec forum.

Yes, for an unbiased opinion, ask someone named "DeltecRules". And go to the Deltec forum, not one where all brands are discussed.

BTW, I think the $814 APF600 is a good skimmer, but cant see what it has over a $650 H&S A150-F2001.

I have an APF600 on my 150G. I have 11 small to medium fish so nothing like your bioload. It does well for the size which was my major constraint(lack of room). I don't think however I would put it on a heavily stocked 180. At the time I got mine the comperable H&S was close in price and slightly bigger. If the H&S is that much cheaper now with the same pump then it's a good deal. I've seen other H&S and they are built very well. You probably will have the same stocking limitation of the APF600 however.

My skimmer dealer who I've purchased a ATi BM200 and H&S A110 from has used, tested and installed many models of the Deltec, H&S, ER and ATi skimmers. He's made the comment that a 5" diameter Deltec has out performed the 6" and 8" ER hands down. Then he's referring to the ER models before this last year, where ER changed pumps & impellers. He's also made a comment that he wouldn't put the APF600 on anything larger than 150g. So, I agree, manufacturer's are really optimistic sometimes; take a look at ASM's specs for example.

I don't think there is a lot of deltec haters here. Some may feel the skimmers are over priced when compared to other skimmers. That is really easy to understand that, seeing that i can get a DAS ex-2 or H&S H&S A150-F2001 for less money and both will perform at least as good the as APF600.

And the DAS ex-2 is half the price as the APF600 and has 2x ab2001 pumps on a 6" body....

oops, i just notice that i messed up in my first post in this thread. I meant to say:

ER has done a lot to improve their skimmers. besides pump, impeller improvements, they have changed neck diameters, outlet designs, collection cup connections. I owned a Deltec AP600 (5") and an ER RS250 (8"). No comparison. The ER is a way more powerful skimmer as would be expected. I would say an AP600 not much bigger than a 75G, APF600, or H&S A150, 150g or so.

I would say the efficiency of the German Aquabee pump as compared to the Sedra pumps is the big difference between the RS135 and APF600. The AB pump runs quiet, uses less electricity, which means less heat transfer. I have heard the same comment from the same skimmer dealer that a 5" Deltec APF600 out performs the 6" series ER skimmers hands down and also several 8" series that ER had earlier that were duds. I have a new H&S A150 on a 180g and it's doing great. Had already made a decision to buy a H&S A200, next model up, but my skimmer dealer talked me out of it as he just didn't feel I needed it. So, the A150 works great on my 180g setup. I have about 7 years using several different ER skimmers and they are a good skimmers. The newer ER look so much like the H&S skimmer that I just bought, the resemblance is amazing. I do like my new recirc H&S better than my old non-recirc ERs.

i spoke with er a while back and they told me if i was filling my collection cup daily then it would be undersized for my application.

i have read so much on here and almost getting addicted to finding new info on skimmers. :)

i guess i still cant fathom whether its the pump to cylinder size science.

or if the aqua bee is just so consistent that it just out skims the sedra.

i thought it was lph everyone was trying to achieve.

one thing i did find out was i modded my jeffs exotic skimmer
it had the cone design collection cup. went from 3" to 2" neck
i switched it to 3" all the way up.
that i feel has improved my skimming on this skimmer
now my er has a 3 1/2" neck which seems to be even better.

well i definately understand everybodys opinion. and have seen deltecs pics several time.

i have also read where people say the genx6000 out skimmed the same skimmer with a eheim 1262 or whatever the spe pump they offer on euro reef. i can only attain that too more lph on the genx.
so i think alot of this skimmer results are very opinonated.

some say well everybody should get a cup a day of skimmate the ? is how dark in my opinion.

oh well it might just be the tootsie roll sucker ? how many licks to the bottom of a toostsie roll pop ... the world may never know LOL.

This is true if the skimmer is truly performing well and keeps taking out organics from your water, but cannot keep up. You also have those dud skimmers that don't even pull out several cups a week, so you can't say that they are properly sized or working properly. I've seen good skimmers that were not tuned properly also not pull out anything either, so a generalization like what ER stated is only true if the skimmer is working optimally.

Yes, it's not just a science, it's an engineering process. German engineers have blueprints and patents galore. It's definitely more than just slapping a good pump or a certain size skimmer body, why do you think ER re-engineered their skimmers last year? It's every else that SJM mentioned in the above posting with riser diameter & height, output diameter & height, and what about height location of the pumps.

i thought it was lph everyone was trying to achieve.

More than this, everything has to be balanced. Take a look at the early model ATi Bubblemaster skimmers. They went through several generations and still could be modifying their design. But their recent generation skimmers are an improvement over the initial ones.

Yes, we have have discussed this before. The old ER 8" skimmers with Sedra 5Ks were duds. The new ones, RS and RC are both very good skimmers. The RS series are a good value, the RC...depends on the model. RS135 is $328. APF600 is $815. Big difference there.

SJM, I understand price vs performance as I've been down that road. But there's no discussion on price here, just why the ratings are what they are and performance. I was just trying to comment on those questions only. If anyone knows me, I wouldn't buy a Deltec if my life depended on it. But I'm not trying to express my preference as much as ratings & performance. Hope that clarifies.

I can comment a little on the Genx 6k powered skimmer. I had an RS250 with that pump and the thing totally kicked butt. Everyone I've seen who has this skimmer really likes it. Yes, the SP5 does pull more air than an Eheim. This is a great skimmer for ~ $480.
