You know my opinion on ratings. Not even worth talking about.
I think many have seen your postings on what you think of manufacturer's exaggerated ratings. But the subject here isn't price vs performance. I think your viewpoint on ratings is valid, you should share it. I love your "bucket of salt" comment.

thanks for all the input. i guess if someone had like 20k to blow we could set up a system like sanjay did on lighting and setup a system of protein skimmers and see what results they come up with.

I would ask your question in the deltec forum, alot of APF600 users there. I have a AP600 and I love it. Alot of deltec haters in the lighting, filtration forum, if you want to see nog shots do a search on the deltec forum.
MarkandK - I wouldn't pose your question on the Deltec forum. If you are really interested, do a search on the Deltec forum for topics you are questioning and read all the posts. Do some research, there's a handful of interesting threads there on the APF600 as well as the Deltec Aquabee pumps.

The skimmer dealer I made my most recent purchase has already done that, testing over 10 different model skimmers last year. I was reviewing some of the other postings on skimmers and there seems to be another RC member who has owned at least a half dozen high end skimmers. I think his RC id is Fliger (spelling?)

I would look at the ATI BM200, its in the best skimmer I have ever used. I have had beckets, large lifereefs, top fathoms, and a deltec 850. Since installing the ATI i have never fought algae and my water seems to sparkle. The deltec/ hs with the eheims are nice but the aquabees are not in the same league as the eheims.

I have to agree on the BM200 is a great performer. I'm thinking that even the BM160 which has capacity rating closer to the RS135 and APF600 would easily outperform both skimmers. So, if you're looking at ratings, the BM160 is more conservative and probably realistic that is easily supports a 100g heavy, but up to 150g normal.

I think manufacturer ratings may be based on a lot of things. One of them that is NEVER spoken of in most skimmer forums is how the thing is fed. If you put two APF600's (or any two skimmers) on the same tank and feed them differently, you can expect different results. This is the same tank and the same skimmer. If one is not feeding their skimmer in the optimal way (I do not), then it's really pointless to blame the skimmer for not performing up to manufacturers specs. If I fed mine more efficiently, it would probably skim better than it does now.
