Apisto's Shallow Deep-waters

Apisto

2-Partin' it!
My last few reef tanks have been primarily Acropora and Montipora with a few random LPS corals. I have had varying degrees of success with them, but was left somewhat unsatisfied, primarily because I wasn't really keeping the corals that I was most interested in.

My last tank was pretty successful and a good learning experience.

The reason for that is that the corals that I was most drawn to were either very hard to come by or very expensive. With this current shallow 40 gallon tank from Advanced Acrylics I decided to take my time and acquire coral that I have always wanted.

Many of these are deep water (or more appropriately smooth-skinned) Acropora, hence the title of the thread.

Battlecorals Splendid Gremlin

The tank is now just about a year and a half old. And, finally, some of the frags that I have acquired I have finally started to grow into small colonies. All corals in my tank come from vendors or other hobbyist and all started has frags. Because this tank is so small I quickly ran out as a rock space for the Acropora that I wanted to keep, so about a year ago I turned my focus more towards interesting LPS corals.

This has been a little bit of a new experience for me, as I have really not kept many LPS in the past. But, it has also been a learning experience and kept me quite interested during the long lull of slow growth associated with Acropora frags.

This Fireworks echinata has much faster growth than most acros, which is a real treat for impatient reefers:D.

Before I move on, I will give a quick rundown of the tank build, although that isn't my true love. The tank, as stated before is an Advanced Acrylics 40 gallon shallow tank. I purchased the tank and stand from a Reefer here in Northern California. The dimensions are 32 X 20 X 14 . I am running a Geissman Infinity with 4 T5s and a 250w halide. I also have 2 Reef Bright LEDs attached to both sides of the fixture. The light is hung barely 12 inches from the water surface, which is just about two feet from the tank's bottom. The corals that require high light get enough if they occupy prime spots in the middle of the tank and high up.

Joe's Rainbow Acro- slow grower, but finally taking off.

Some of the low-light loving acros do well to the sides of the tank and down low.

Snipersps/Tyree Pink Dragon Tails- probably should be called pink and white DT. Grows pretty quick and has a lot of white new growth!

The tank is bare bottom and has a lot flow from 2 MP 40s and two small Tunzes. More on this later.

Part of the reason I am doing this thread is that I have had a Nikon D5100 for a while now and never use it. That is largely because I really don't know how to use it very well. The pics in this thread are shot in manual with white balance post-processing in Lightroom. Hopefully, it will make me learn how to take better pics over time.

One of the few times this guy has retracted it's feeders/sweepers.

I really don't have much time on my hands right now, as I am hustling trying to keep the golf course semi-green/brown without loosing too much turf:headwally:, but I figure this is a good distraction when I can get to it.

In addition, my eyes are so bad that once I start getting close-up pics of corals that are further away from the front, I will actually be able to see what they look like.

A crop of the Joe's Rainbow pic from above, obviously not perfect, but better than I have seen before:fun2:

I've seen his system recently and it's beautiful. Love the smooth skins he keeps. That Joes is top notch. He named most of them and Neil is not joking about the higher end stuff he is keeping. WOW.

Great stuff Neil! Thanks for documenting the tank for us

Thank you, Mark. I would rather be documenting your tank, but I think someone has already done that. Suprising that I have not yet posted a favia pic:idea:...Rainbizzle :bounce3:

For some unknown reason I am never able to view any of the photos Neil posts in his threads... ? :sad2:

I have no idea why. Does anyone else have problems viewing images? Or know what might be the problem on Dave's end?

Thanks, Shawn. There is certainly more that I would love to get ahold of, but I am really crowded as it is. I did what I always do and put frags too close together on the rockwork and will pay the price as time go on. Luckily most of my acros are slow growing or have small encrusting bases.

Hey Neil, it was nice to finally meet you and thanks again for the beautiful frag of your "fireworks" Acanthastrea Echinata

I hope to score that nice big frag of Jason Fox Jack O Lantern Leptoseris next if I can scrounge up some more spending money before it's gone :lol2:

It was great meeting you too, Dave. That echinata is really nice. I'll be curious to see if it looks any different as it matures in your tank.

Are you still having problems viewing pics in this thread? I wonder if anyone else is having the same issues?:uhoh2:

Yes, I still can not see your photo's... I tried my iPad and my desk top but no luck. I am able to see other peoples pics in other threads, just not yours for some unknown reason?

Nice tank! You have some awesome pieces packed in there! What is the Favia and Chalice in post #12?

Thanks! Packed is right. I really need to get rid of a few things. The favia is an un-named rainbow and the chalice is Flaming Bugatti. I need better pics of both of these. I will try again later.

Tank and corals look great! Where are you keeping your parameters at, and light schedule?

Thank you. In a small tank it is pretty common to have more fluctuation of parameters. I have been pretty fortunate to have only minor shifts in everything for the past few months:celeb1:.
Temp 78-80
Alk 7.5-8.5
Cal 420-430
Mag 1350 or so
PO4 .06
Haven't measured Nitrate for awhile

I use a little bit of GFO and a little carbon and dose Prodibio weekly. I am now trying small every-other-day water changes, so I might try eliminating GFO and/or Prodibio.

looks great neil!

Thanks Tim. Hope you and your family are well. And I hope that your green dragon stopped it's necrosis.

I really want to come and see you. Text coming.
