I am thinking that once a month is going to get old really fast.
Think about it, we will be running out of activity's to do VERY quickly!
I think once a month will get to hectic for some to attend every meeting if they wish, and I believe that finding a host store or location will get very tricky to... LFS around here seem to be glad to host, but once a month, that might get annoying more than it would be productive.
Another concern with a once-a-month club meeting is the fact that, for those of us who wish to grow corals for trade/sell once a month is going to limit the amount of stock available each time. Remember, corals only grow so fast.
Having meetings that are spaced farther apart will allow "growers" to cultivate more specimens for trade/sell.
When the 5 founders of this society, me being one of them, originally started discussing the possibility of frags swaps/meeting times/locations etc..., the founders, along with ALL the attendees of the original club meeting were in agreement to have a quarterly meeting. ( that's 4 meeting per year )...
This would allow for several things to take place, First, a suitable location could be found, second, this quarterly time period would allow for more people to bring more frags of more variety, third, we would have 3 months for planning, and scheduling, this way, if one person couldn't make it on a particular day in that month, we could work around that so that everyone could attend. Fourth, the LFS/location would be easier to get, LFS might get annoyed at friendly and excited hobbyists always asking to host another meeting., etc...
Teena Burton, one of the founders, before she passed away, agreed that frequent meetings, could lead to a decreased interest in future meetings.
She stated that, If we are to have meetings every month, people are going to get bored because we will be running out of ideas and when the next scheduled meeting was to come, there would probably be a decrease in attendees.
Right now everyone is very excited about this last meeting that Tammy hosted for us, yes. But don't get over excited and skip the details that count...
I think we all need to discuss these issues and get every ones opinion on them before someone starts scheduling another meeting, without even having a suitable host yet, much less activities or anything else...
Please take into account all these suggestions I have listed, and lets all take time to discuss concerns that we may have.
I think we will all agree that, we want this club to grow over time, not dwindle out in the next few meetings because of bordom.
In the few months we would have if the meetings were quarterly, this would allow us to discuss events during the meetings.
Frag shows, presentations, concerns about the hobby, talks about were to buy those prized specimens from.. etc...
we cant have a frag show every meeting, this is going to get boring.
I'm not trying to say we shouldn't have a meeting at the end of this month, but I don't want everyone coming in with nothing to do but swap and leave. We need to get more social, get to know everyone better, and make this as productive as possible with fun, interesting activities for those who attend!
I think that having the HANDS ON fragging Demo the first time was a good idea, for those that had never fragged before, these people actually got to take a coral of their choosing, and after learning about proper methods, do it themselves! This was fun for everyone, and the people that were brave enough to do this actually got to take their frag home!
So suggestions are welcome!
Lets talk!
